Biography zZz

Remarkable duo from Amsterdam, featuring a drummer and a keyboard player, mixing rock 'n' roll, surf, psychedelics and dance.

The Amsterdam duo zZz starts in late 2000 when two flat mates, Björn Ottenheim and Daan Schinkel, decide to make music with a drum kit and an old organ in the basement. After a week, they compose five songs and zZz is invited to play them at a party where its music proves a perfect mix of rock 'n 'roll, surf, psychedelics and dance. The Sound of zZz is born.

zZz begins to build up a genuine reputation. Requests for them to play continue right through the year and zZz graces venues like OCCI, Winston, Paradiso, Ruigoord and the annual Amsterdam Sleaze Festival. When Blieb, the owner of the Sandwijck Studio in Utrecht, sees zZz play at Ruigoord he is so impressed that he offers them free professional studio time. The addition of vocals by drummer Björn makes up the definitive style of zZz's music.

The zZz demo, Bikini Inferno, is released in the beginning of the year. The music delights the ears of Henk Jonkers (Fatal Flowers) and he invites the duo to work in his studio. Meanwhile the demand for live performances grows rapidly. zZz performs regularly at the Winston and Club Panama. They also perform at the Amsterdam Dance Event.

Fatal Flowers

In February, zZz plays live on the Club Circuit program of alternative-formatted Radio Kink FM, and continues to work with Henk Jonkers on the release of a new demo early in the year. They receive rave reviews. In May zZz makes a huge impact when the band plays at the EKKO in Utrecht where it supports the 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster. June sees them at the VPRO's Club 3voor12 radio program, where they are likened to the John Spencer Blues Explosion, Suicide and The Doors. The Excelsior Record Label gets hold of the zZz demo, and decides to release two songs on vinyl. Autumn is a busy travelling period for zZz. In September, they play at the first Amsterdam Calling, part of the In The City music conference in Manchester, England. zZz is featured alongside bands like Alamo Race Track, Templo Diez and The Gathering. In October zZz has four gigs planned in New York, one of them being at the CMJ Festival with Caesar, zea, Voicst, Seedling and Bettie Serveert. Another one takes place on Halloween at 'the Fez' in Brooklyn. The track 'Ecstasy' is being used in the soundtrack of 'Phileine Zegt Sorry' ('Phileine Says Sorry'). This film is an adaptation of the Ronald Giphart book by the same name. Meanwhile, zZz is busy again with Henk Jonkers producing a full album, which should be available before the end of the year from the Excelsior label.

Gem Little Things That Kill

zZz zZz travels yet again to the US. This time the bizarre duo enhanced by producer/sound engineer Henk Jonkers behind the mixing desk plays at the South By Southwest (SXSW) music conference. Also, they 'tour' New York City, including a concert at legendary CBGB's. zZz's debut album is slated for an August release, but is postponed tentatively to the new year. In October the duo again leaves for the US to play at the CMJ festival.

zZz For the second year in a row the South By South West (SXSW) music conference in Austin, Texas invites zZz. In may the Henk Jonkers produced album Sound Of zZz finally comes out on Excelsior, one month after its US partner/license holder Howler Records. On May 12 the band kicks off for the first leg of its US 2005 tour at Hoboken's Maxwell's. On July 25 is the closing day at New York's Mercury Lounge. The second leg of its tour is centred around its third show at the New York's CMJ Music Marathon (September 14-17) and lasts well into October. With the track Bubblegum zZz contributes to the Sonic Youth Tribute album Evol, a remake of the 1986 classic by that name, which comes free with the indie magazine That Dam. The original of Bubblegum is actually by cult hero Kim Fowley. Sonic Youth released it as a B-side on its Starpower single. In August the duo performs live at the Lowlands festival. zZz supports Anouk two times in the Antwerp Sports Palace (November 9 and 15) and four times in the Rotterdam Ahoy' Arena.

zZz In March Sound Of zZz is released in Japan. The track O.F.G. is used in Atari's new Driver 4 Parallel lines game. As of February 28 zZz tours the US again for two months, including a Tower Records-endorsed showcase at SXSW. The duo supports Fatboy Slim on a seven-day Japanese tour in May. Later zZz appears on A-festivals in Italy (Arezzo Wave in July), Spain (Benacassim in July) and South Africa (Oppikoppi in August).

The year starts off with a show at Eurosonic in January. In March, zZz travels to the US for several shows, including at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. In the period April-May, the duo performs in France, Spain and England. The song Ecstacy is used for a Japanese commercial for mayonnaise brand QP Mayo. Daan Schinkel gets a Duiveltje (Devil) award for Best Keyboard Player of the Year. zZz and producer Henk Jonkers go into the studio for recordings of a new album. The video with the single Grip is shot in one take during the opening of an exhibition about Dutch videos in a museum in Den Bosch. In the summer the duo plays shows at Glastonbury (June), Rock Otoccu in Slovenia, Dour in Belgium (July), Les Mediterraneenes in France and Summer Sundae in Leicester (August). Mid August the duo also goes on a Barfly tour in the UK.

The track Grip is a hit on the duo's website. The concept of the video, including music, is picked up by FIAT and sold for an international TV commercial. On 18 July, zZz organises a Sleazefest in beachclub Timboektoe with performances by The Pedro Delgados, Hallo Venray, Dead Elvis & His OneMan Grave, Hidden Charms, The Works and Kiki from the act Malle Pietje and the Bimbos. In July the men travel to Thailand to shoot a video with fighting cocks. This video is also the basis for the artwork of second album Running With The Beast (November). The controversial video is temporarily banned from YouTube. Running With The Beast is released in the Benelux countries through Excelsior Recordings. The record features a varied sound with disco (Lover) and dark new wave (Angel). A club tour is kicked off in December and ends with a sold out show at club Melkweg in Amsterdam.

Hallo Venray Malle Pietje and the Bimbos

Running With The Beast is released outside the Benelux countries in January through Epitaph's ANTI-label. After shows in Scandinavia, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Russia, zZz returns to the Netherlands in April for a club tour and several festivals including Oerol. After a festival tour in Europe and Russia (Europavox in Clermont-Ferrand, Book Festival in Moscow, SPOT festival in Arhus and Supersonic in Birmingham), zZz goes to Italy twice for a club tour. zZz organises the Sleazefest in September. In the same month the duo returns to Moscow for the ARTS weekend festival. zZz is invited by CMJ in New York for several shows in October. Running With The Beast is scheduled for release in Japan and the United States in the autumn.
