a balladeer is an Amsterdam-based band that varies guitar pop with piano ballads.

2002 - 2003

In 2002 Marinus de Goederen releases the demo Swim With Sam which he recorded with Bart Erkelens (Jane Doe). De Goederen goes into the studio with producer Reyn Ouwehand (Kane) to record a second demo. He supports 16 Horsepower during the show in Paradiso in Amsterdam. He supports Danish band Saybia twice and wins a 3FM Music Award which allows him to record in the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. Early 2003 he is joined by bassist Walter Wilhelm and gitarist Erik Meereboer. a balladeer signs a demo contract with Universal and starts recordings with producer Martijn Groeneveld (J Perkin, this beautiful mess). Then drummer Tijs Stehmann joins the trio. After shows in Rumania Marinus de Goederen and Walter Wilhelm win the public's choice award at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands Talent Show in the category singer-songwriter.

2004

a balladeer In February a balladeer plays several shows in Germany and Denmark. In the same period the band's first official EP is released, produced by René de Vries (Rollercoaster 23, this beautiful mess). The tracks Rumor Had It and They've Shut Down Marks & Spencer get regular airplay on Dutch national radio. a balladeer is support act for band's like Skik, Bløf, Keane and Saybia. Walter Wilhelm leaves the band in December.

2005

a balladeer works at its debut album in the ICP studios in Brussels with Belgian producer Ronald Vanhuffel, Bløf bassist Peter Slager and Robert Kirby, string arranger of British singer-songwriter Nick Drake.

2006

a balladeer Bassist Arn Kortooms (ex-Soundsurfer) joins a balladeer for live shows. Late February a balladeer shoots a video with director Corb!no (Maarten Corbijn) for the song Swim With Sam. The band signs to EMI Music. Debut album Panama is released on May 5. The following month a balladeer wins an Essent Music Award. In June the band support British band The Feeling in Tivoli, Utrecht and two days later they are support act for US band Live in Ahoy', Rotterdam. On 9 September a balladeer is support act for Dutch band Bløf at its historic 1000th show ever.

2007

a balladeer a balladeer plays the Noorderslag festival in January. The single Robin II is released as a limited edition on 7". a balladeer wins a Zilveren ('Silver') Harp, an award for talented newcomers in Dutch music. The award is presented on 5 February during the Harpen Gala 2007. Inspired by VH1's Storytellers, a balladeer gives three seated concerts, in Nijmegen, Amsterdam and Utrecht. The emphasis is on the songs of the band and the story behind the songs. During the semi-acoustic shows a balladeer presents new material from the yet to be recorded second album.

2008

In January a balladeer starts recordings for a new album in the ICP Studio in Brussels. Peter Slager and Bas Kennis from Bløf are involved in the preproduction and as guest musicians. Gordon Groothedde is responsible for the mixing. The album title Where Are You, Bambi Woods? (September) refers to the disappearance of the blonde porn actrice from Debbie Does Dallas. Several songs are about the year in which singer/songschrijver Marinus de Goederen lived near Dallas. In September and October the band is off on a club tour.

2010

Marinus de Goederen releases a solo album on 12 February. Sorry, Kid is released under the name mr. a balladeer. Peter Slager from Bløf plays bass on the album which also features an important role for Klimt!, the string quartet of the Metropole Orchestra.
