Biography Zoppo
Zoppo is named after a character from Umberto Eco's novel In The Name Of The Rose. Starting out as a lo-fi two-piece outfit, Zoppo becomes an alternative rock band influenced by US and UK indie rock and lo-fi bands by the likes of Sentridoh/Sebadoh, Smog en Hood.
1997
During the summer Van Appeldoorn and Landman start recording music. The four-track recordings end up on the vinyl LP Chi Pratica Lo Impare A Zoppicare! Released on Zoppo's own The Drowning Man label. The lo-fi-album features new wave influences from Minny Pops, Tall Dwarfs and The Residents.
1998
The first 7" single is released on the US lo-fi label Blackbean And Placenta. They share the split single Double The Fun with Frambooze from Belgium. The song Radio Racer is included on a compilation CD. Zoppo becomes a real band when Asta Cat, Arjan Tuin and Bas Ernst join Van Appeldoorn and Landman.
1999
In June the band's first CD Belgian Style Pop is released. The album, on which the lo-fi influences are less prominent now, gets good reviews. The band plays the Crossing Border festival in The Hague and can be heard on several Dutch radio stations.
2000
Zoppo plays the Noorderslag festival in Janary. Its show is seen by legendary BBC-DJ John Peel who invites the band for his radio show. While Zoppo is preparing for recordings of a new album, Landman quits the live band to pursuit other projects. He is replaced by Jeroen Kuiper (ex-Vamos, Second Rocker Me). The group travels to Les Aumonts in France in preparation of the new album.
2001
Zoppo contributes to the compilation album Hometaping Is Illegal (And It's Killing Music) that comes out on the Dutch label Living Room Records. The band's third album Les Aumonts is released mid-October. Drummer Ernst is replaced by Paul van der Maas (December Boys). Asta Kat quits Zoppo and joins Seesaw.
2002
Avec Aisance is Yuri Landman's solo project. On May 17 he joins Pfaff on keyboards in Paradiso. Zoppo supports Belgian band Millionaire during shows in the Netherlands and Belgium.
2003
Guitarist Cees van Appeldoorn is guest musician at shows by label mates Seesaw. Zoppo is working on new material. Jeroen Kuiper quits and is replaced by Corno Zwetsloot (Seesaw).
2004
On 12 January a split-7" with the band El Camino is released. Zoppo is recording a new album in Corno Zwetsloot's studio.
2005
On stage the band is joined by Ineke Duivenvorde (ex-Seesaw) on keyboards and samples. In the fall Drowning Man, Zoppo's own label releases the album At Jenny Richee by El Camino.
2006
On March 13, five years after Les Aumonts, fourth album Don't Trust Scarred Survivors comes out. The title is a variation on a phrase out of the track Tragic Carpet Ride by Polvo. Live Zoppo every now and again covers a song by this US band. On the track Get Over Cute former band member Asta Kat provides guest vocals. In the autumn the band breaks up with label Transformed Dreams.
2008
Former bass player Jeroen Kuiper releases the CD De Dans Van Pepita (The Dance Of Pepita) with Dutch alternative rock band Nachtwezen. Former drummer Bas Ernst can be heard on the album Love Will Slow Me Down with his new band Junior Eats Alone. Ineke Duivenvoorde and Corno Zwetsloot perform with their band Space Siren.
