Biography Vengaboys
Brainchild from DJ Wessel van Diepen and producer Dennis van den Driesschen. The band's sound is that of party music combined with a house beat. The songs are simple and the lyrics are about sex, partying and dancing.
1997
In March 1997 The Netherlands makes their first acquaintance with the Vengaboys. At first instance, the entire project is surrounded by secrecy. This is the real story behind the band: the people who came up with the idea are disc jockey Wessel van Diepen and producer Dennis van den Driesschen. Also part of the 'dream team' are Van Diepen's sister Wendelien (PR) and Peter Schoots (management). The band's first single is Parada de Tettas (or: Parade of Tits). The single becomes a hit record in The Netherlands followed by countries such France, Japan, Germany, Spain, Israel, Italy, England, Ireland and Scandinavia.
1998
From 1998 onwards the band becomes more and more successful. Up & Down and We Like To Party enter the top 3 in the Dutch charts and Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom reaches the number 1 spot. The band receives platinum records for Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom and We like To Party. Musically, the songs are interchangeable. However, the formula appears to be a golden one and in the summer of 1998 Southern Europe is ready for the Vengaboys.
1999
In 1999 America follows and both Up & Down and We Like To Party reach number 1 in the Billboard dance charts. In the meantime, everybody in The Netherlands seems to be going to Ibiza with the Vengaboys. The band is nominated for the MTV Best Breakthrough of the Year-award.
2000
In February the single Shalala is released and the Vengaboys receive a TMF Award for Best Dance Act. The single Uncle John From Jamaica does well in the British charts. The band tours Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia. They record Take Me To The City for the Charlie's Angels movie that, oddly enough, can be heard in the film but is not on the OST. Bart Claessen (Barthezz) wins the Vengaboys remix competition with his take on Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song).
2001 - 2006
Denice leaves the band. In 2003 she releases the single Straight Up, but her version of the old Paula Abdul song does not become a hit. In 2004 Yorick participates in the Universe tournament of the World Fitness Federation. With Jolanda Beuving he is voted Best Duo.
