Biography Roderik de Man
Though Roderik de Man begins writing music relatively late, he quickly develops into a highly productive composer. He devotes himself principally to chamber music and works for smaller ensembles, partially because he wants to have personal contact with the musicians he writes for. His musical language is characterized by its colour and rhythm, as well as an adventurous, open approach to compositional style and technique. The combination of live performance and electronic sound plays an important role in much of his music. But purely electronic pieces are an exception in his work, in part because he is well aware that performance is an equally important aspect of the musical experience. Some of his works combine music with other media. “In a certain sense, each piece is a journey. You set out as a composer without knowing for certain whether you will arrive where you want to. And ultimately, the whole story changes, because others have to retrace your steps in their own way.”
1965
