Richard Sims was born in England on May 3, 1961. Since 1990 he lives and works in The Netherlands.
Education
From 1970 to 1985 he took private lessons with Susan Brandt (violoncello) and a.o. George Hurst, Michael Rose, Roger Pope, Simon Halsey en Norman del Mar (conducting). From 1980 to 1986 he studied Pure Mathematics at the universities of Oxford, Warwick and Liverpool. In 1989 he took his Master of Music Degree at the University of Liverpool (composition with James Wishart). From 1990 to 1995 Sims studied composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Louis Andriessen and Gilius van Bergeijk and in Siena, Italy with Franco Donatoni.
Activities
In England Richard Sims was conductor of many amateur and semi-professional orchestras and ensembles. He was founder and conductor of Liverpool University Chamber Orchestra. In The Netherlands he was also active as a conductor of The Barton Workshop, Instant Composers Pool, HEX Ensemble and ensembles at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
Prizes
In 1986, 1987 and 1988 Richard Sims won the Alsop Composition Competition.
