Pieter Bakker was born on November 26, 1952 in Amsterdam. He lived in this city until 1987, and then moved to the countryside of the province of Friesland.
Education
From 1984 till 1992 he studied conducting and theory of music at conservatories of Hilversum, Leeuwarden and Groningen. In 1987 he received several private composition lessons from Paul Termos and in 1988 he studied composition at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam with Daan Manneke.
Activities
In 1988 he became church organist in Schraard (Friesland). Pieter Bakker has written columns and articles on music, e.g. in the Dutch music periodicals Mens en Melodie, Het Orgel and Tijdschrift voor Muziektheorie. Since 1996 he is chief editor of the periodical Kunst en Wetenschap. He is also active as a photographer.
Compositions
In 1994 he was commissioned by the Province of Friesland to write Achter de wolken (Behind the clouds) for flute ensemble Flauto Nuovo. His works have been performed in Leeuwarden, Groningen and Amsterdam, as well as in Jever (Germany), and broadcasted on Dutch radio.
