Biography Perkin
Singer/songwriter from Utrecht who first acts under the name J Perkin in 2000 with the album Exhibit on which he combines (acoustic) rock with trip pop and samples. His second album Songs 'n Sounds is released in 2004 under the name Solo.
1998
J Perkin is the pseudonym for Michiel Flamman from Utrecht. He has been in several bands and also writes his own music. His musical career really takes off when he and producer Martijn Groeneveld (Rollercoaster 23) release the like-like album Stardumb with which they win several local band competitions.
1999
Flamman starts a new musical project under the name J Perkin. According to Flamman J Perkin is a character that provides him with the opportunity to express things. His career takes off after having performed at the Lowlands festival where he presents his promo CD J Perkin Live And Acoustic. After this show he performs live on Dutch radio In the meantime Perkin also forms a live band and supports Ocean Colour Scene and Crash Test Dummies. The band includes Jeroen Kuiper who will later play bass in Dutch band Zoppo.
2000
Perkin releases debut album Exhibit through record company Tender (where he also works as A&R manager). The album, which gets raving reviews, is actually a double CD: Exhibit A and Exhibit B. The first part consists of acoustic songs and the second part of songs played with the band. Characteristic for the album are the very personal lyrics (for example about his bi-sexuality), and the combination of acoustic pop/rock with like influences and the use of samples. J Perkin performs on national radio and in August he plays the Lowlands festival for the second time.
2001
Singer Birgit has a big hit with the song I Know that was written by Perkin. Together with producer Martin Groenewold he produces the demo of the band Mill.
2002
Perkin sings on the Laidback Luke track Generations. J Perkin releases under the name Double D, a song that is promoted during the world championship football.
2003
J Perkin gets a lot of attention from the media for his 'headphones concert' (= no PA, just headphones) in Utrecht. Together with guitarist Rogier Wagenaar (Judith), keyboard player Simon Gitsels (Birgit), guitarist Denys Purwin, bassist Berry Janssen and drummer Jasper Moes (Beatbusters) Flamman forms the band Perkin. The track Errorist appears on a compilation CD with music magazine Oor. The band plays several festivals and also works on a studio album. Perkin plays a mini headphones concert at the Motel Mozaique and Lowlands festivals. With the solo material he and keyboard player Simon Gitsels and producer Martijn Groeneveld go into the studio. On November 2 Perkin plays a 2 Meter acoustic show.
2004
The band Perkin ceases to exist. Flamman signs a recording deal with the Excelsior label under the name Solo. His first record, recorded with Simon Gitsels, is the album Songs 'n Sounds which is released in August. Guest musicians on the album include Minco Eggersman (at the close of every day), Rowin Tettero (Mindmenders) and Marg van Eenbergen (Seedling). In November Solo receives an Essent Music Award.
