Paul Bruinen was born in Naaldwijk in 1958.
Musical education
He studied oboe at the Conservatories of Music in Utrecht (1980-1982) and Groningen (1982-1985). He also studied composition with Walter Hekster (Groningen), Peter-Jan Wagemans and Klaas de Vries (Rotterdam Conservatory of Music).

Prizes
In 1989 he was awarded a prize with Don't Disturb for large wind ensemble in the Kosmu Composition Concours. In 1994 Sermone for orchestra was awarded the incentive prize at the Trento Composition Concours in Italy.
