Biography Lawn

Four-piece band from the city of Groningen which combines alternative rock and post rock. The band plays melancholic and sometimes noisy songs which feature not just guitars but also Fender Rhodes, theremin and samples.

1997 - 1999

Lawn records two demos which are produced by Jan 'Pet Sound' Heddema. In the same period the band also covers Motorpsycho's Manmower which ends up on an international Motorpsycho tribute album which also includes covers by two other Dutch bands: 35007 and Zea. Late 1999 Lawn wins the Groningse Pop = Prima award and also enters the finals of the Grand Prix Of The Netherlands Talent Show, which is won by Amsterdam-based band Mind Benders.

Lawn plays gigs in the Netherlands and Germany. The band's debut album Lawn-dro-mat is recorded in October and November with producer Pieter Kloos in studio The Void.

The band signs to Grond Records. Lawn-dro-mat is released in the Benelux countries. Positive reactions from the Dutch music press are followed by gigs for radio station VPRO (Club Lek) and at the Eurosonic festival. Lawn also supports acts like J. Mascis, Fireside and Henry Rollins. Late 2001 the Blunoise label releases Lawn-dro-mat in Germany.

Lawn records a video and plays the Haldern festival in Germany. For the time being, the band is forced to play with two temporary bass players. Lawn also plays a Belgian festival called 'Gentse feesten'. Drummer Thys Veenstra is replaced by Andre Gubbels.

In January Lawn and producer Pieter Kloos record new material. When drummer Andre's other band Cochon Bleu is taking up too much of his time he quits the band. Andre is replaced by Okkie Bult (ex-sevenHz, ex-Mobile). It takes until the summer for the band to complete new album Backspace. On this album Lawn is joined by Anneke van Giersbergen (the Gathering), Carmenkata and Andreas Willemse (violinist/keyboard player Audiotransparent). Backspace comes out in October on My First Sonny Weissmuller Recordings. The title track of the album is also included on the compilation album Silent Minority Sampler Volume 1.

The Gathering

In January Lawn (with the Gathering's Anneke van Giersbergen) plays the Noorderslag festival in Groningen. In February the cover compilation More Than A Woman comes out for which Lawn covers Tracy Chapman's Fast Car. Late May the song Fix is released on single. The single CD also contains a remix and a video. On 1 October the album Backspace is released by the Supermodern label in Germany, Austria and Italy. Lawn supports the release with a German tour.

Lawn Lawn is in search of a new bass player after Sietse Dost has announced that he can no longer commit himself fully to the band and wants to quit. In the second part of the year the band is busy writing new songs.

In the period April/May the group plays several shows in Germany. Late May the band goes into the studio for recordings for a new album. Former bass player Sietse Dost joins the band Winterpain. Lawn is support act for The Gathering in December.

Lawn performs with bands like Anathema and Agua de Annique.

Third album Silver (March) is recorded with British producer Phil Vinall (Placebo, Radiohead, Snow Patrol and dEUS). The band's heavy guitar sound from their early period has been replaced by a more song-oriented approach. Singer Lydia Wever (Brown Feather Sparrow, this beautiful mess) is guest vocalist. During the State X New Forms festival in December, Lawn performs with the Frisian Symphony Orchestra.

It takes them to big venues like WUK in Vienna (24 January), Posthof in Linz (25 January) and Rockhouse in Salzburg (26 January). The band signs a record deal with Make My Day Records in Düsseldorf, Germany. The album Silver is released through this label in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
