Biography Kane

Rock band from The Hague that has become very successful over a short period of time. Gradually they have steered away from Pearl Jam/Creed-inspired grunge rock to a more European, U2-inflenced sound.

1994

Singer Dinand Woesthoff forms the band Citizen Kane and records 'Back to the real world' as a first demo.

1998

Four years later Kane is formed by Woesthoff and guitarist Dennis van Leeuwen who team up with Aram Kersbergen (bass) and Cyril Directie (drums). Later on Tony Cornelissen, also on guitar, joins the band. They attract the attention of BMG, record a single and play as supporting act for Swedish band Kent.

1999

Kane goes on a short tour across the country supporting German crossover band Guano Apes. The single, 'Where Do I Go Now', is released and becomes a modest hit due to much airplay on both radio and TV. The drums on this track are played by Hans Eijkenaar (former Candy Dulfer, René Froger). Woesthof writes the duet, My Best Wasn't Good Enough, for singer Anouk, which they record together and ends up on Anouk's album Urban Solitude. The band records their first album and the single 'Damn Those Eyes' becomes a hit in December.

In January the band plays the Dutch Noorderslag festival and can also be seen at the Dutch summer festivals Pinkpop and Parkpop. The band is also chosen 'Best Rock group' at the TMF awards this year. The CD/DVD 'With or Without You' is recorded during the Marlboro Flashback Tour during which the band performs songs by U2. Kane is also awarded 'Best Dutch Act' at the MTV European Music Awards. Woesthoff and Van Leeuwen assist newcomers Di-Rect with writing songs and improving their songwriting skills and take the young band on as support act on their As Long As You Want This 2000 tour. In December Woesthof takes two months off because of problems with his voice.

Drummer Cyril Directie leaves the band (he will play the drums for Total Touch) and is replaced by André Kemp from Billy the Kid (who are, like Kane, also from The Hague). In February 2001 the band receives an Edison music award for their album 'As Long As You Want This', in the category 'Best Alternative (Inter)national'. In March the band goes on their first trip abroad, to Portugal. Kane's new album So Glad You Made It is released in the autumn and is preceded by the title track, which enters the Dutch Top 100 at number 7, making it the band's most successful single so far. The drums on the album are not played by new drummer Kemp, but by Martijn Bosman (Dyzack, Gotcha!). Kane appears to have yet another line-up with second guitarist Paul-Jan Bakker and drummer Martijn Bosman. Bosman replaces André Kemp who returns to session work (with the Pilgrims) and his music school. Production during live shows is being done by Jeroen van Iterson. Kane again win a MTV Award in the category Best Dutch Act. The group also wins a Top Of The Pops award in the category Top Act 2001.

Bassist Aram Kersbergen, guitarist Tony Cornelissen (Sita) and keyboard player Ronald Kool leave the band in the Spring. Matto Kranenburg (ex-Handsome 3some) joins the band on bass. Kane is awarded an Edison Music Award in the category Best Alternative. In the Spring Kane supports Scottish band Simple Minds on their German tour. For the second year the band is awarded three TMF awards in the categories Best Rock Group, Best Album (So Glad You Made It) and Best Website. Recordings taken at the Pinkpop festival end up on the new single Rain Down On Me. In June Kane plays Rock Werchter in Belgium. A gig in Johannesburg in support of the World Environment Conference is cancelled at the last minute because Woesthoff is ill. Instead on September 3 the band plays a benefit concert for 'Jo'burg' in its hometown The Hague in front of the House of Parliament. A December gig in the Rotterdam Ahoy arena sells out within thirty minutes. Also in December the band receives the public's award of the city of The Hague. The award is handed out each year to anyone positively promoting the image of the city.

In January guitarist Paul-Jan Bakker and bassist Matto Kranenburg are kicked out of the band. Reasons for the conflict are both personal and musical. A replacement for Kranenburg is found in the same month: Manuel Hugas (Jan Akkerman, Candy Dulfer, Ro & Paradise Funk, Marco Borsato). Hugas is reunited with his former Ro & Paradise Funk band mates, drummer Martijn Bosman and keyboardist Nico Brandsen, who has been upgraded from guest musician to steady band member. Dion Murdock joins Kane as its new bass player. The multi-instrumentalist Murdock comes from the band Mothers Finest (his parents are singers Glenn Murdock and Joyce Kennedy). He also worked for people like John Hayes and Macy Gray. Murdock wrote several songs for Gray, played bass and drums on her albums and also played the drums in Gray's live band. The DVD Live In Rotterdam contains a two-hour registration of the show Kane played at the Rotterdam Ahoy' arena in December 2002. Dinand Woesthoff is special guest during a DJ set by DJ Tiësto. On Saturday June 28 Kane plays a one-off gig at the Amsterdam Arena. The song Rain Down On Me, in a remixed version by DJ Tiësto, is used for the computer game FIFA 2004 and also as a tune for a commercial for the Bundesliga, the German football league. The album What If, released in June for the foreign market, is a compilation of the first two Kane albums. In September Woesthoff marries Dutch actress Guusje Nederhorst in Las Vegas. On September 29 Rain Down On Me is released in Germany.

Tiësto's remix of Rain Down On Me enters the Belgian Ultratop 50 Singles chart at number 12 and then shoots straight to the top slot. On 30 January, one day after the death of Guusje Nederhorst, Dinand Woesthoff writes the song Dreamer (Gussie's Song), as a tribute to his wife. One week later the song is released on single and enters the Dutch charts at number one. Live In Rotterdam by Kane gets an Edison music award for best DVD. Martijn Bosman receives a Duiveltje ('Devil') for best Dutch drummer. The award is an initiative of the Dutch Rock & Pop Institute. Kane receives a TMF music award for Best Rock Act National. In April Rain Down On Me is released as a second single in Germany. The CD single contains four versions of the song, including aforementioned remix by Tiësto plus the track Mother. Early June Kane tours Germany. One of Kane's last concert of the European tour takes place in Portugal during the European Championships football. Rain Down On Me comes out in the UK on August 23. The single contains not only the original rock version of the song, but also the dance remix by Tiësto. Even before the official release the remix is a hit in the UK club scene. Bassist Dion Murdock leaves the band in order to become Intwine's drummer. The UK's Yolanda Charles (Robbie Williams, Aztec Camera, Mick Jagger, Paul Weller) is his replacement in Kane. Again Kane adds some more silverware to its huge collection. This time (and for the third year in a row) the alternative rockers are awarded Best Band from the Benelux at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The band beats fellow Dutch acts DJ Tiësto and the Sheer plus Belgian bands Soulwax and Novastar.

2005

Along with DJ Tiësto, Bløf, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Acda & De Munnik, Di-rect, Berget Lewis and Xander de Buisonjé, Dinand Woesthoff plays on the benefit for the Tsunami victims in Asia on January 6 on the Dam Square in Amsterdam. Woesthoff opts for a special performance with fellow 'indo-rockers' Andy Tielman and René van Barneveld (ex-Urban Dance Squad). Yolanda Charles already leaves the band in February. She does play on upcoming album Fearless, however. As of now Kane presents itself as a trio, featuring Woesthoff, Dennis van Leeuwen and Martijn Bosman. On March 19 in Amsterdam's Panama club the band receives a 3FM Award in the category Best Band. At its rare live gigs at Queen's Day (April 30) in Amsterdam and at the renowned Pinkpop festival the band features guest musicians Nico Brandsen (keyboards) and Manuel Hugas (bass). Endorsed by sponsor Vodafone the single Something To Say is first made available though cell phones as of April 28, and only a week later in the regular shops. In the end of May, shortly after Pinkpop, Fearless enjoys a number entry in the album charts. In August Kane plays in front of 32.00 people at the Almere Strand. The show is released on DVD later in the year.

Kane wins a 3FM music award in the category Best Album for the CD Fearless. On August 26 Kane plays a show at the Malieveld in The Hague. Kane is the first band in eight years since the Rolling Stones to stage its own (non-festival) show on the Malieveld (a big 'city green'). On October 13 again the band is honoured Best band at the annual TMF Awards. For Dutch horror film Sl8n8 (premiered: September 29) guitarist Dennis van Leeuwen and singer Brace co-write the theme song Wees Niet Bang ('Don't Be Afraid'). As the project d'BRACE the duo releases the single Superster ('Super Star') the next month. Van Leeuwen's heavy guitars back up brace's sultry vocals.

2007

Drummer Martijn Bosman leaves Kane. It's an amicable split. At the Musicians Day on May 12 at Amsterdam's Melkweg, Dennis van Leeuwen wins a Devil (musicians to musicians) Award (established by the Dutch Rock & Pop Institute) in the category Best Guitarist. The rest of the band is looking for a new record label and finds one in Universal. Kane works with producer team The Matrix (David Bowie, Korn, Britney Spears) and producer Martin 'Youth' Glover (U2, Crowded House, INXS, Texas, The Verve) on a new album.

2008

Kane performs in Rotterdam, near the Wilhelminapier and the Erasmus bridge. Dennis van Leeuwen can be heard on the single Als Je Ooit Nog Eens Terug Kan (If You Could Ever Go Back), which is recorded as part of the Ticket For Tibet festival which takes place on 20 April in Amsterdam. The single enters the Dutch Single Top 100 at number one. On 28 June Kane performs in De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam. After the release of the album Everything You Want on 9 May, Kane plays several try-out shows in preparation of the show in De Kuip. The short tour kicks off on 5 June in Tivoli, Utrecht and ends on 20 June in Mezz, Breda. The band describes Everything You Want as a 'rock 'n soul album', not only because of producer Scott Jacoby, but also thanks to American guest musicians Neil Dorfsmann, Gail Ann Dorsey and Sterling Campbell. The Dutch tour ends on 30 November with a sell out show in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. On 28 November the show in Rotterdam is released on CD and DVD.

Bløf Robin Berlijn

2009

On 6 June, Kane is the first band to perform in the new stadium of football team ADO Den Haag. The show is a test to see if the stadium is suitable as a concert location. On 27 November, the album No Surrender is released. The record is recorded during the summer in Brussels. Guest musicians on the album include Nico Brandsen, Ivo Severijns, Robin Berlijn and Joost Kroon. In October, ten years after the release of the band's first single Where Do I Go Now, Kane plays three days in a row at Paradiso in Amsterdam. The show is called the Kane Singles Only show.
