Jan Bus was born on February 20, 1961 in Laren.
Education
He studied economics at the VU University in Amsterdam for some time, before taking up classical guitar at the Academy of Music in Hilversum.
Activities
Jan Bus worked with various ensembles before he devoted himself to composing. Since 1999 he is a member of the board of the Dutch Composers' Society.
Compositions
His career as a composer took off with the performance of his orchestral piece Praefixum (1987) during the national Young Composers Project, organized by the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra in 1989. His compositions have been performed by various renowned musicians and ensembles. Jan Bus composes chamber music, symphonic music, theatre scores and film scores. He produced several of his own operas, including Westerling (1995) and Stalin and the Taste of Oats.
Prizes
In 1991 he was awarded the third prize at the international composition competition Mozart 1991 in Vienna for Quando salta fuori la tonica for orchestra. In 1995 Jan Bus was nominated for the Northern Telecom Young European Composers Competition.
