Biography Jaap Geraedts
1924 - 1952
Jaap Geraedts was born in The Hague on July 12, 1924; he died on August 31, 2003. He received his first music lessons from his father Henri Geraedts, composer, choirmaster and music teacher. Jaap Geraedts studied from 1943 to 1952 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague: composition with Henk Badings, instrumentation with Hendrik Andriessen and Sem Dresden, flute with Johan Feltkamp and conducting with Willem van Otterloo and Jan Koetsier. From 1947 to 1949 he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels (Belgium) with, among others, Jean Absil. From 1952 he taught flute at the Toonkunst Music School in Leiden. He was music editor of the weekly Haagse Post and music critic for the daily newspaper Het Vaderland. In 1975 he was appointed artistic manager of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. He was board member of the Willem Pijper Foundation, but above all he saw himself as a composer. Jaap Geraedts wrote for orchestra, songs, chamber music and especially choral works. He composed for various instrumental combinations, but also in that respect the flute, his own instrument, was very dear to him: the Sonatine for flute and piano (1953) is well-known.
Geraedts wrote biographies on Maurice Ravel (publ. Gottmer, 1955) and, together with his father Henri, on Béla Bartók (publ. Gottmer, 1961).
