1991

The butcher's son from the province of Brabant starts writing his first songs and forms his first band: Le Roi (which is French for 'the King').

Roy becomes the centre of attention when reaching the finale of the Songwriter Session competition organized by radio show Country Time.

1997

JW's debut album Round Here comes out. The Dutch press is very positive about the album, which sells over 3000 copies. Early October Roy plays an acoustic set on the legendary 2 Meter Sessies show, hosted by Jan-Douwe Kroeske.

1998

J.W. Roy And The One Night Band tours the US. One of the band's gigs is at the South by South West (SXSW) music conference in Austin, Texas. In June the band plays three shows during the Chet Atkins' Musician Days in Nashville Tennessee. Roy and fellow Dutch singer Ilse DeLange perform together during Dutch TV show Heeren van Amstel Live.

1999

JW Roy Roy supports Ilse DeLange on her Dutch tour. The single Deeper Shades comes out followed by an album of the same name. Apart from several melancholic lovesongs and up-tempo tracks, the album also features a duet with Ilse DeLange, titled Amsterdam, Sunday Night.

2001

JW Roy & The One Night Band break up. After having worked together for over five years the band has decided its time for something different. Jan Willem Roy keeps performing and recording as JW Roy. Some members of the One Night Band turn up in the Sunset Travellers, a new band formed by keyboardist Roel Spanjers.

2002

Roy forms a new studio band. His new colleagues are Ruud van den Boogaard, Nico Heilijgers, BJ Baartmans, Gabriel Peeters and Eric van Dijsseldonk. The latter two are ex-Smalltown Romeos members, a Dutch band from the city of Eindhoven. In June Keep It Coming comes out. The album differs from the familiar roots sound. The album contains songs by Bart van der Zeeuw (ex-drummer with K's Choice). Roy goes on tour with a band that includes Van Dijsseldonk, Peeters, Baartmans and Bartel Bartels (bass/backing vocals).

2003

In 2003 the singer/songwriter will again perform at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

2004

JW Roy Straight Back To You is the first single of J.W. Roy's fourth album Kitchen Table Blues. The album is produced by Gabriël Peeters and Kees Spruit and has guest appearances by pianist/organist Chuck Leavell (The Rolling Stones), violinist Carrie Rodriguez, keyboard player Roel Spanjers and the guitarists Richard van Bergen, Eric van Dijsseldonk and Ruud van den Boogaard. Until April the line-up of Roy's band is: Ruud van den Bogaard, drummer Gabriël Peeters, bassist Harmen de Bresser and keyboard player Mike Roelofs.

2005

JW Roy With producer Gabriël Peeters Roy cuts the album Laagstraat 443 (named after the street where the studio is based in) in the Brabant dialect, which becomes an unexpected success. It marks a return to his original label Munich Records. He records two tracks by cult hero Gerard Maasakkers, who also hails from the province of Brabant. In the springtime the two play a series of duo shows under the name RoyAkkers.

2006

On his album Wijzer ('Wiser') Guus Meeuwis sings a few JW Roy songs. In June Roy joins Meeuwis on his shows at the Philips stadium. On December 28 and 29 Roy performs live with Nynke Laverman and Fernando Lameirinhas at Muziekcentrum Frits Philips in Eindhoven. The collaboration is registered on the mini album Fado Blue.

2007

JW Roy Guitarist/singer Richard van Bergen and his band Shiner Twins release their debut album All In Store. JW Roy contributes to Eilandskind, the first solo album by Ad Grooten (Pater Moeskroen). In October he goes into the studio to record his second Dutch language album with JB Meijers. In the same month JW Roy kicks off another tour, accompanied by guitarist BJ Baartmans, keyboard player Gabriël Peeters, (double) bass player Ivo Schouten and drummer JJ Goossens.

2008

On 13 January JW Roy presents his Dutch language album JW Roy. Guest vocalists include Guus Meeuwis, Ilse DeLange, Gabriël Peeters, Jelle Paulusma and Rick de Leeuw. JW Roy performs with his new backing band which includes Baartmans, Goossens, Peeters and also bassist Gerald van Beuningen. JW Roy contributes to the benefit single Als Je Ooit Nog Eens Terug Kan (If You Could Ever Return). The single is recorded as part of the Ticket For Tibet festival which takes place on 20 April in Amsterdam. The single enters the Single Top 100 at number one. REC 08:04:08 is an acoustic album featuring seven songs. The album is included in the fourth edition (July/August) of music magazine Heaven. The CD JW Roy Leeft (JW Roy Is Alive) includes recordings of two Dutch shows. JW Roy sings a duet with Aggie de Kruijf on the second album Heading For The Sun by Aggieland.

2009

JW Roy contributes to the debut album of Flemish actor and vocalist Roel Vanderstukken. He writes several songs and can also be heard as a guest vocalist. JW Roy also sings on the songs Thin Line and Mary-Ann on the third album by Rosemary's Sons called Home Sweet Home.

2010

On 12 January performs his new theatre show at Music Centre Frits Philips in Eindhoven. Roy is backed by his band De Hartenjagers. His new (seventh) studio album JW Roy Weet Het Zeker, features Americana-influenced songs with Dutch lyrics. The album is produced by Gabriël Peeters. Horn section The Jay Horns contributes to the album.
