Education
He studied theory of music with A.C. Schuurman and at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. In 1981 he attended the Gulbenkian summer course with John Cage and Merce Cunningham and master classes composition with Morton Feldman.
Activities
In 1978 and 1979 he was the pianist in ensemble Hoketus (founded by Louis Andriessen). For some years he was the musical director of the Dutch modern dance company Dansproductie. Afterwards he was chief of the department Music and Dance at the Dutch broadcasting company NPS. In 2008 he was appointed director of the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague.
Compositions
Hek van der Meulen composed both for concert practice and for dance, theatre and film. His works have been performed in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Israel and the U.S.A. Additionally, several works have been broadcasted by the Dutch radio as well as in Denmark, France and Israel. In 1980 he received a scholarship from the Institute of Theatre Research in Amsterdam to study musical theatre together with the poet Judith Herzberg. This resulted in the chamber opera Merg (1986). In 1982 he was commissioned to compose new music to the classic avant-garde film Regen (Rain) by Joris Ivens. Among his compositions are: The tower (1992) for choir, Tidal grasp (1992), written for the Ives ensemble and Bending the Bone (1995), written for Orkest De Volharding.
