Biography Fania Chapiro
Fania Chapiro was born on June 10, 1926 in Surabaya (Indonesia). Her father was of Russian origin and her mother Dutch. She died on December 6, 1994 in Hilversum. She received her first music lessons from her father Nohoum Chapiro, a violinist, when she was three years old. At five she began piano lessons with Johan Madlener and at seven she played Mozart's Krönungskonzert in public. She studied with Lazare Lévy in Paris for five years and also studied music theory and solfege at the Paris Conservatoire Nationale. During the Second World War she studied harmony and counterpoint with Sem Dresden, and later composition and instrumentation in New York with Jerzy Fitelberg. She performed in Europe and the United States (1949-1953 and after 1967) as a pianist and appeared on Dutch, German, French, Swiss, Belgian and American radio and television. She composed several works for piano and wind ensembles. The Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, the Suite for piano 4-hands and the Sonatine for piano solo were performed on the radio and at recitals in London and Paris.
