Evrim Demirel was born in 1977 in Izmir, Turkije.
Education
Evrim Demirel was educated in Izmir High School of Fine Arts and he studied piano with Nergis Sakirzade. Then he enrolled at Bilkent University in Ankara becoming a student in the Theory-Composition Department of the Music and Performing Arts Faculty. He earned his B.A. from this institution studying composition with Elhan Bakihanov, and went to the Netherlands for further music studies in Rotterdam Conservatory. He studied jazz piano under Rob van Kreeveld, electronic music under Rene Uijlenhoet and composition under Klaas de Vries and graduated from the composition and jazz- piano departments. Currently, as a master student, he is studying composition with Theo Loevendie in Amsterdam Conservatory.
Compositions
Almost all of the works of Evrim Demirel were composed upon commissions and performed accordingly. In 2002 he wrote for Het Verfijnde Oor -a special composer’s project of the Nieuw Ensemble - Telvin, where he used Turkish microtonal 'makams'. Evolution was performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Estonia in 2003. In 2004 he composed Zeybek for Asko Ensemble, Saz Semaisi No 1 for trio, Ottoman Miniatures for orchestra and Four Folk Songs From Anatolia for Atlas Ensemble. In 2005 he composed Saba in Istanbul for Constantinople Ensemble, MAKAMSIZ for Ziggurat Ensemble, Cross-Linked for Aarre Ensemble and Quotations for the Doelen Ensemble in 2006.
Prizes
At the International Lepo Sumera Composition Contest for Young Composers 2003 he won the finalist diploma with Evolution. During the Young Composers Project 2004 of Holland Symfonia Demirel received the NOG Incentive Prize for Ottoman miniatures.
