The Blue Fighters

Opus Gainfull changes its name into Earth and Fire. Singer Jerney Kaagman joins the band and they are supporting act for Golden Earring on a regular basis. Golden Earring guitarist George Kooymans writes for them the song Seasons, with which they score their first top-3 hit.

Ruby Is The One en Wild And Exciting are released. The band's sound is heavily influenced by the mellotron.

The album Song Of The Marching Children is released and the band has two Top-10 hits with Invitation and Storm And Thunder.

TopPop, AVRO 1972 (Bron: fotocollectie Beeld en Geluid) Earth and Fire enjoys a number one hit with Memories.

Atlantis is released and Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight becomes a top-3 hit.

With Love Of Life, Earth and Fire scores another top-3 hit.

1975 - 1978

Although Earth and Fire does have several hits in this period, the songs have less impact than before. The band tries to modernize its style, but it is clear its sound has been overtaken by other, more popular styles of music. They record several demos - one of which is the song Weekend - but Polydor rejects them all.

Phonogram is interested in the band's new sound and releases Weekend as a single. It becomes the band's biggest success so far, not only in The Netherlands but also abroad. Soon after, however, it becomes clear that the band can't keep up their newly gained success.

Andromeda Girl, taken from the Reality Fills Fantasy LP, is released as a single.

With the album In A State Of Flux The band falls back on their sound from the late 1960s, early 1970s, but even though the single Twenty-Four Hours becomes a hit, it does not bring them the success they had hoped for.

Jerney Kaagman

1987 - 2004

Earth and Fire have re-formed and record the album Phoenix. Jerney Kaagman becomes chairwoman of the pop musicians' union and works as a PR manager for a commercial radio station in The Netherlands. In 2000 she becomes managing director of the Conamus Foundation, which was founded in 1962 to assist in promoting the work of Dutch music creators and to encourage the performance of Dutch popular music in the Netherlands as well as abroad. In 2002 Kaagman becomes a most prominent and merciless member of the jury in the Dutch version of television programme Idols, a talent contest with numerous auditions. For its album Hypnotic Underworld Japanese band Ghost cuts a cover version of Hazy Paradise, the B-side Earth & Fire's first single from 1969.

Drummer Cees Kalis finds tapes (live shows and demos of World's On Fire and I See A Wood among others) from the days that Manuela Berloth still fronted the band.

On April 16 Kalis dies at the age of 56 due to a heart attack. Historian/journalist Fred Hermsen and historian/journalist Dick Hermsen write the book Earth & Fire: The Biography 1969-1983 (Eburon publisher's) for which almost all band members, but also producers and managers were interviewed. The book features personal stories but also unique illustrations from photo albums of the band members.
