Biography De Staat
De Staat is a Nijmegen rockband formed around singer, guitarist and songwriter Torre Florim. The band is named after the Louis Andriessen composition of the same name. The powerful, adventurous music is often compared to Queens Of The Stone Age and dEUS.
2006 - 2008
De Staat starts as Torre Florim's solo project. He has been working on the songs since high school. The first serious recordings start in 2006. He does the production himself and plays nearly all the instruments. Fuck The Writer (Emil van Steenwijk) and Wout Kemkens (The Bloody Honkies) contribute to the recordings. In De Staat's music influences can be heard of Queens Of The Stone Age and dEUS. The origin of the song Habibi is the Egyptian singer and bandleader Ali Hassan Kuban. Florim then assembles a band in order to play the repertoire live. In 2006 De Staat participates in the competition De Roos Van Nijmegen. Florim graduates from the Utrecht HKU Conservatory, majoring in Composition and Music Production. He regularly produces records for others, like The Gospel Of The Bloody Honkies (2007) by The Bloody Honkies and an EP by Go Back To The Zoo (2008). The presentation of the debut album Wait For Evolution is planned for the spring of 2008, but it is postponed to January 2009, since the Excelsior label is interested in releasing the album. With the help of engineer Darius van Helfteren the CD is remastered in three days. De Staat is by then performing regularly, and receives most of the bookings in the travelling festival De Popronde. In October the band performs as support act to dEUS for their tour of Great Britain and Ireland, performing in Dublin, Manchester and London. In November De Staat takes part in an Excelsior presentation at the Crossing Border festival.
2009
After a sold-out CD presentation, on 8 January at the Nijmegen Doornroosje, De Staat does a remarkable performance at the Groningen Noorderslag festival. The band lives up to the expectations and convinces both the press and the audience with their concert at the 3FM stage at the Oosterpoort. Wait For Evolution gets rave reviews, and is released in Belgium in March. On 25 May De Staat reaches a wide audience when they perform in the popular TV talk show De Wereld Draait Door. The band is an in demand act in the club circuit and is invited to several large festivals, including Pinkpop, Parkpop and Lowlands (with special guests Bas Bron (Bastian) and drummer Bram Hakkens from Kyteman's band). Chris Goss of the band Masters Of Reality and the American label Mascot witnesses the concert and contacts the band. The single The Fantastic Journey Of The Underground Man is used for Colin McRae: Dirt 2, a computer game based on international rally competitions. Before the fall tour starts in early November a DVD is released containing a registration of De Staat's show at Lowlands. The fall tour also calls at the Belgian cities Antwerp, Brussels and Kortrijk and ends with two sold-out shows in their hometown Nijmegen. In December Torre Florim and Roos Rebergen (Roosbeef) present the mini album De Speeldoos. The musical project is based on poems by the mentally challenged clients of the Dichterbij care organization. Wait For Evolution wins the 3VOOR12 Award for the best Dutch album of 2009. Writers of the music magazine LiveXS elect Wait For Evolution as best album of 2009. In the final list of the authoritative music magazine Oor the CD takes up the number 17 position.
