David Rowland was born in Exeter (England) on May 31, 1939. He died on November 5, 2007 in Oldenzaal (The Netherlands).
Education
He studied composition with Peter Racine Fricker and piano with Arthur Alexander at the Royal College of Music in London. He also attended the Darlington International Summer School of Music.
Activities
For several years he was a musical director of the Royal Shakespeare Company during which time he wrote theatre scores and conducted their ensembles in performances in London and on tours in Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany and Britain. He has taught composition and piano at Trinity College and the Royal College of Music in London and in 1975 he moved to The Netherlands. At the Twents Conservatorium at Enschede he taught contemporary music, theory and composition. He founded the Arcadia Ensemble which is specialized in performing modern music. He also gave lectures in Russia, Poland and Germany.
Compositions
His works include several compositions for live performers with tape, one of which (Tetrad) was chosen by the BBC to represent British music at Unesco's Rostrum in Paris (1972). Principal works include Easter stanzas for soprano and orchestra, Partita for piano solo, Kaleidoscope for 2 pianos and 2 percussion players, Serenata for string orchestra and a number of works incorporating live electronics.
