Biography Cor Kee

1900 - 1997

Cor Kee was born on November 24, 1900 in Zaandam and died there on January 3, 1997.

He studied with Jan Zwart at the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam and thereafter composition with Sem Dresden.

He was organist at various Baptist churches, the Round Lutheran Church in Amsterdam, (3-manual Bätz organ) and the Old Lutheran Church on the Spui (3-manual Bätz-Witte organ), also in Amsterdam. He gave concerts in The Netherlands and abroad. Cor Kee taught privately and was organ and improvisation teacher at the Conservatory of Music in Utrecht. He was also permanent improvisation teacher at the International Summer Academy in Haarlem and guest teacher at various courses in other countries. Several of his Dutch and foreign students won first prizes at the international Organ Improvisation Competition in Haarlem and the national Organ Competition in Bolsward.

Compositions for organ: 'Psalmen voor orgel' (three albums: 1939, 1944, 1958), 'Credo en 50 Psalmbewerkingen' (1978).

He wrote 'De Hemelwagen' (1965), with many illustrations by Ernst Felder (publ. J.H. Kok in Kampen) and several articles on various musical subjects. In the periodical Het Orgel, a series was published between 1970 and 1977 entitled 'Uit mijn boekerij'. In the Gregorius tijdschrift (Gregorius journal) a detailed article with examples was published on the history and practice of improvisation.
