Bernard van den Boogaard was born on January 17, 1952 in Castricum.
Education
As a child he received piano lessons and his first compositions were awarded at the Youth Music Contest in Kennemerland. At the age of 13 he took lessons in composition with Peter Schat. Afterwards he studied composition with Ton de Leeuw (Composition Prize in 1975) and piano with Hans Dercksen (resulting in a soloists' certificate) at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music. He also attended master classes with Ton Hartsuiker, Theo Bruins and Jan Wijn.
Activities
From 1983 to 1989 he taught piano at the Conservatory of Music in Leeuwarden. He was a member of the State Exam Committee for Piano. From 2003 he has a flourishing practice as a private piano teacher. Van den Boogaard gives solo recitals, partially with his own music. His interpretation of works by Charles Griffes, Skrjabin, Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff and Peter Schat were well received in the press.
Compositions
In the years 1970 to 1980 Van den Boogaard was mainly occupied with music theatre: among several productions are Dictatuur (Dictatorship, 1970) and Ogme (1980). Besides he composed chamber music for various ensembles, such as a piano trio (1983) and Sporen (Tracks, 1978) for alto flute and guitar, Phoenix variaties for piano (1987), as well as educational music, e.g. Etudenboek voor de onderwereld (Book of Studies for the Underworld) for bass clarinet or bassoon, and Melancholic Moods for electronic organ. For orchestra he wrote Symfonie der duinen (1986), 3 Wordsworth Songs (with choir) (1990) and Schisma for piano, sampler and orchestra.
