Biography Beef!
Very successful reggae band whose members come from renowned Dutch bands such as Gotcha!, City Pig Unit and Let's Quit.
1999
Beef! is formed by drummer Hansz Deijnen (ex-City Pig Unit and ex-Let's Quit), bassist Koen Lommerse (ex-City Pig Unit and ex-Gotcha!) and singer Pieter Both (ex-Gotcha!). The three make music that results in the radio show the Chop Shop. The Chop Shop is in fact a radio play with lots of beats, spoken words and lots of humour.
2000
The trio, plus guitarists Twan van Gerven (ex-Tree Funk Concept) and Bram Wouters (ex-Righteous Rockers) and keyboard player Bas van de Biggelaar (ex-Let's Quit and ex-Righteous Rockers), starts working on suitable material for an album. The Beef! formula - a merry mix of reggae, rocksteady, ragga, hiphop and Jamaican funk - proves to be very successful. The band's full-length debut, Flexodus (the title is a reference to the Bob Marley album Exodus from 1977) is presented at this year's Lowlands festival.
2001
Beef! performs at the Noorderslag festival and also makes a second appearance Lowlands festival. The band's second album is released on the label Play It Again Sam. At the invitation of the Festival Mundial Beef! Plays at the festival Les Nuits Atypiques de Koudougou in Burkina Faso.
2002
Beef! goes to the UK to record a new album that is set for release in June. The album Beef! is produced by Bitty Mclean (UB40 and Sly & Robbie). Guest musicians on the album are the Matic Horns (UB40 and Finley Quaye). In May Beef! plays at the Pinkpop festival.
2003
In January they play at the Noorderslag again. Beef! is awarded a Zilveren ('Silver') Harp music award in February.
2004
In March Twan van Gerven wins a 'Duiveltje' award ('Little Devil'), as he is voted Best Guitarist of the country by his peers. The award is initiated by the Dutch Rock & Pop Institute. Beef! cancels a gig at the Lowlands festival in order to finish off its new album Last Rudy Standing. In August the band plays at the Sziget Festival in Hungary.
2005
New album Last Rudy Standing, produced by Michel Schoots (ex-Urban Dance Squad) comes out. On May 5 the 'Ambassadors of Freedom' are helicoptered to Liberation Day festivals around the country (Assen, Groningen, Haarlem and Roermond). At the end of November Beef! travels again to Africa for four shows in Burkina Faso. Together with Gotcha! manager Marcel Hendriks singer Pieter Both begins download site PlayMeLoud.com
2006
After almost eight years drummer Hansz Deijnen a.k.a. One Drop quits the band. He is replaced by Jonas Filtenborg.
2007
Pieter Both can be heard on the song Alles & Niets ('All Or Nothing') on the album Meer Dan Ooit ('More Than Ever') by Edsilia Rombley. The album Last Rudies Live! (February) is recorded in November 2006 in Bibelot, Dordrecht. Beef! is one of the acts during the Petje Af concert organized by rapper Ali B during Festival Mundial in Tilburg. For a radio show, Beef! records the song I Would Stay by Dutch band Krezip. At the request of fans the song is added to the band's website as a download. The accompanying video is recorded with webcams at the homes of the band members.
2008
New album The Original is released. Various musicians appear on the album, including Jaqueline Govaert from Krezip. She can be heard on Beef!'s version of the Krezip song I Would Stay.
2009
On 20 January Straight Through The Roof comes out. It is the second single from album The Original. The special single version is mixed by Oscar Holleman. The band describes the song as a crossover of 60's rhythm and blues and reggae. The CD Favorites (April) is a 'best of' album which also features a cover of the Prince track When Doves Cry. The band tours the country until mid September with the Favorites tour. Following this, the band takes a break to work on other projects.
2012 - 2013
After a three year break Beef! returns to the stage, performing on the big three day festival Zwarte Cross in the East of the country. The positive response leads to a small tour in November and December.
