Barbara Woof was born on September 2, 1958 in Sydney (Australia).
Musical education
She studied composition with Peter Sculthorpe at the University of Sydney and received in 1980 cum laude the title bachelor of music. With a travelling scholarship she came to The Netherlands in 1981. She studied until 1985 composition at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague with Peter Schat and Jan van Vlijmen, electronic composition with Jan Boerman and analogue studio techniques at the Instituut voor Sonologie in Utrecht with Jaap Vink.
Activities
Since 1988 she has taught twentieth-century music analysis, instrumentation and compostion as a member of the staff of the Faculty of Art, Media and Technology at the Utrecht School of Arts. In 1992 she returned to Australia for one year as composer-in-residence with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, writing orchestral music and working in the Education Programme.
Compositions
Barbara Woof has obtained commissions from various Dutch organisations and performing groups. Hommage à Odilon Redon for orchestra has been performed in 1983 by the Nederlands Ballet Orkest during the International Gaudeamus Music Week. In 1990 she received a commission for the annual tour of the Nederlands Studenten Orkest: Canzone for orchestra. Nachtreis, music for the youth theatre Voyeurs 2 was premiered at the Holland Festival 1993. In 1995 she received a commission from the Rotterdamse Kunststichting for Dervish for clarinet and Tárogató-Rag (1998) has been performed by Rosa Ensemble at the Dutch Music Days (Nederlandse Muziekdagen 1998).
Prizes
In 1985 the electronic composition Syzygy was awarded the Martim Codax Prize in Vigo (Spain)
