Biography Ziggi Recado

Reggae singer Ziggi grows up with reggae, dancehall and hiphop during his youth in St. Eustatius. From 2004 his popularity increases because of the singles In My Head and High Time. On stage Ziggi is accompanied by the Channel One Band with members from St. Maarten, Surinam and Aruba.

1981 - 2000

Ricardo Blijden is born on 8 March 1981 in Rotterdam. During his youth he lives in St. Eustatius, the second smallest island of the Dutch Antilles. He sings in the Choir of the Seventh-Day Adventists and grows up with reggae, dancehall and hiphop. Inspired by acts like Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Sean Paul and Wyclef Jean, he starts making his own music as Ziggy (which he changes into Ziggi sometime later to prevent people thinking he is Ziggy Marley), a name which was given to him by his grandmother.

2001 - 2005

Together with his musical companion Bigguz, Ziggi writes his own songs which he records with the help of producer Stone. Ziggi returns to the Netherlands to study economics. He gets in touch with Mega D from the RMX Crew and his future manager and producer Mr. Rude (Berteaut Fleming). With Mr. Rude and singer Shanaira Rey he records his debut single In My Head in the Rock House Studios. The video accompanying the song can be seen on music channel The Box and is a hit with popular urban radio station FunX. Ziggi performs during the Dancehall Extravaganza in Nighttown, Urban Style in Rotterdam and Kwakoe Festival 2004 in Amsterdam. With Benjamin Arthur (like Ziggi one of the artists on Rock 'N Vibes, a platform for artists from the Caribbean) he works at a remix for the song Strickly Hot Gyal. After the tracks Fake Friends and Party Peeps, High Time (2005) also gets a lot of airplay on the radio. Ziggi tops the FunX Xchart for six weeks. He is also nominated for a MOBO Award (Music Of Black Origin). After a remix session with Jamaican musician Turbulence for the song Notorious, Ziggi goes into the studio early December with Jamaican superstar Elephant Man. The pair records the track Inna Mi Bed that is released on Ziggi debut album.

2006

In January Ziggi plays the Noorderslag festival. The release of debut album So Much Reasons is scheduled for 6 February. The title of the album is a Caribbean corruption of the expression 'so many reasons'. Radio station FunX and MuziekWeb offer the album as a free digital download for a short period before the official release. In June Ziggi wins an Essent Music Award. For the video with the single Outta Control Ziggi travels to St Maarten. The video also features US D-Roc and Kane (The Ying Yang twins). The singer and his backing band The Renaissance Band play several festivals in the summer (Parkpop, Two Sevens Splash, Lowlands) and support UB40 in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. On December 12 single Hightime is released as a vinyl in Germany. The B-side features So Much Reasons.

2007

The German single reaches number five of the charts of European vinyl distributor Soundquake. Ziggi's first show of 2007 is in Cologne in front of a sell-out crowd at the Stadtgarten. He and his band play during the sailing race St. Maarten Heineken Regatta '07 in March. In April All Obstacles is released, in both the Netherlands and Germany. Ziggi is one of the acts at a special show organised by Dutch rapper Ali B. In November and December Ziggi embarks on a major European tour supporting German superstar Gentleman.

The In Transit Tour kicks off on 26 September in Atak in Enschede. Support act is Maikal X (Michael Parkinson) who used to be part of Postmen and who is also known as Shy Rock.
