Comic book artist Yuri Landman leaves the band Zoppo, in which he has been playing bass guitar since the beginning, and runs a comic book shop for a number of years. Landman feels the call of music too strongly, however, and together with drummer and producer Valentijn Holländer he starts the band Avec Aisance. In 2003 they record the ten track debut album Vivre Dans l'Aisance at the Amsterdam Boeton Studio, with various guest musicians. The CD contains short songs bordering on melodic noise and punk. Vivre Dans l'Aisance is released in January 2004 in a remarkable rectangular sleeve, designed by Landman.
Landman designs and builds his own string instruments, including the Moodswinger and the Moonlander, both for himself to play and to be used by well-known musicians from the international rock avant-garde. Guitarist/drummer Aaron Hemphill of the American band Liars is the first to be offered the Moodswinger. The instrument is featured in the tune Leather Prowler, on the fourth Liars album from 2007. The Moodswinger bears some resemblance to the electric guitar, but it is in fact an electric twelve string overtone zither with three bridges, and an alternative tuning. Lee Ranaldo of the New York noise band Sonic Youth and other musicians from the international rock scene acquire a string instrument designed by Landman, including singer/songwriter Liam Finn (New Zealand musician Neil Finn's oldest son), The Veils, dEUS, Blood Red Shoes, Lou Barlow, Enon, HEALTH, Micachu, David Holmes, Half Japanese and The Moi Non Plus. For the Canadian band The Luyas Landman develops the Moodswinger II, a version that is lighter in weight and easier to play. Since the production of the Moodswinger is expensive and time-consuming, Landman invents the Home Swinger in 2009, a cheaper Do-It-Yourself variety, which may be constructed in four hours only. Landman gives workshops at cultural festivals and at experimental concert stages in Europe and America, including The New York Knitting Factory.
In April 2010 the Moodswinger and the Home Swinger are acquired by the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Arizona - the largest museum of musical instruments in the world. With a line-up of ten students of the Rotterdam Zadkine Popacademie the guitarist forms the band Yuri Landman & KRGGHH*@#$%!! Ensemble, making use of a number of Home Swingers and other instruments, including a 25 meter long string instrument. The group makes its stage debut at the Groningen Gideon Festival in early June, with guest musicians from Daily Bread, Pioneers Of Love, Neon Rainbows and Bonne Aparte.
