Biography Wouter Hamel

Wouter Hamel is a Dutch singer who performs pop songs with a jazzy angle. His singing style is compared to crooners like Mel 'The Velvet Fog' Tormé and Frank Sinatra, but also to younger jazzy vocalists like Jamie Cullum, Michael Bublé and Matt Dusk.

2004 - 2007

In August 2004 Wouter Hamel (The Hague, 19 May 1977) sings live on the Dutch station Radio 4, accompanied by The Young Sinatras. Having graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts Hamel is the first male singer to win the Dutch Jazz Vocalists Competition. It earns him many gigs, in theaters, at festivals and in various radio and TV shows (including the popular TV talk shows Barend & Van Dorp, Paul de Leeuw, De Wereld Draait Door and Pauw & Witteman). He also gains experience as a member of the a capella group Intermezzo. The singer is inspired by pop musicians like PJ Harvey and Jeff Buckley as well as by jazz vocalists like Mel Tormé, Mark Murphy and Anita O'Day. He is nominated for the 2006 Deloitte Jazz Award, intended to honor 'talent deserving wider recognition'. In March 2007 Dox Records releases his debut album, Hamel, which he recorded with producer Benny Sings. The album reaches the top 20 of the Album Top 100 and the single As Long As We're In Love reaches a modest position in the Top 100. In July Hamel appears at the Rotterdam North Sea Jazz Festival twice: once as support act to Katie Melua and once with his own band, plus special guests Benjamin Herman and Rory Ronde. The video for the single As Long As We're In Love is premiered in November during a concert at the Amsterdam Paradiso. In November Hamel flies to Japan to promote his album with radio and TV appearances. The first Dutch club tour finishes on 15 December at the Sneek club Het Bolwerk. Wouter Hamel is nominated for the Edison Jazzism Audience Award.

2008

After winning an Essent Award the singer performs at the Noorderslag festival at the Groningen Oosterpoort in January. It is the start of a new club tour taking him to pop venues like Tivoli (Utrecht),'t Paard (The Hague), Rotown (Rotterdam), Effenaar (Eindhoven) and Patronaat (Haarlem). With special guest Benny Sings Wouter Hamel performs at the Billboard Live clubs in Osaka and Tokyo in early February. Hamel is awarded an original Originele Rembrandt by the Stichting Nederlandse Muziek (Dutch Music Foundation), as well as the 2007 Buma Zilveren Harp, an incentive prize for promising artists who have contributed a great deal to Dutch music. He receives the Zilveren Harp on 5 March at the Buma Harpen Gala at the Bussum theater Het Spant. On 10 and 12 July Wouter Hamel is the support act to Doe Maar at the Rotterdam Kuip soccer stadium. Hamel and Benny Sings set out to record his second album.

2009

Wouter Hamel considers his second CD, Nobody's Tune (February), a more personal album than his successful debut. The overall sound is richer with the addition of exotic instruments (including the Swedish Hagström wind organ, autoharp, mbira, Japanese bells, steel drums and a mellotron) and guest spots for label mate Benjamin Herman, trumpeter Kyteman and members of the latter's band, the Rotterdam singer Shirma Rouse and members from his regular backing band: Gijs Anders van Straalen (percussion), Sven Happel (bass), Pieter de Graaf (keyboards), Jasper van Hulten (drums) and Rory Ronde (guitar). The record shows influences from jazz, folk, Burt Bacharach and klezmer. As early as January Hamel is in Japan for the promotion of his album. After an official CD presentation at the Paradiso on 21 February the singer starts a theater tour taking him to forty Dutch towns and cities. Nobody's Tune reaches the gold disc status. Hamel signs a worldwide record deal with Decca/Universal. The international edition of Nobody's Tune is released in Great Britain at the beginning of 2010.

2010

The international edition of Nobody's Tune contains a bonus CD with a number of live recordings and a remix of See You Once Again by Mark E. Brydon (Moloko). The extra CD is also available separately as an EP. The concert at the Amsterdam club Panama on 24 February is the kick-off for a Dutch theater tour taking the singer to 24 theaters. In these concerts Hamel and his band perform new material, and old tunes are given a special rendition with instruments like accordion, saxophone, mbira, glockenspiel, banjo, surdo and melodica.

2011

In August Wouter Hamel releases his first single Demise of his third album Lohengrin. The album, the first one produced by the singer himself and with new pianist Thierry Castel, will be released in the Netherlands, Great Britain and South Korea at the end of September. On Saturday 27 August Wouter Hamel performs at the Uitmarkt in Amsterdam (the official opening of the cultural season), joined by Fuse string ensemble and with guest appearances of Giovanca and Benjamin Herman. His show on the main stage is broadcasted live on Dutch television. The show is a teaser of his Dutch theatre tour that will happen from 17 January till 17 April 2012.
