Willem de Vries Robbé was born in Amsterdam on December 3, in 1902 and died on May 9, 1996 in Blaricum.

He studied viola at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music and composition with Sem Dresden.

The flute plays an important role in the compositions of De Vries Robbé. His oeuvre includes orchestral works - 'Ballade' (1939), 'Pastorale' (1938), 'Eclogues' for string orchestra (1966), 'Concertino' for flute, harp and orchestra (1950) and 'Concerto pastorale' for flute and orchestra (1962) - and chamber music for various ensembles - two 'Serenades' for flute and string trio (1949 and 1950), 'Movement' for string quartet (1979), 'Butterflies' for vibraphone (1974) and 'Variaties in oude stijl over een Luxemburgs volksliedje' (1971) for 3 bassoons.
