Biography Wilbert Bulsink

Wilbert Bulsink (1983) began writing music scores and playing organ at very young age. He studied piano with Ton Hartsuiker and Gert-Jan Vermeulen, instrumentation with Theo Verbey and composition with Daan Manneke, Wim Henderickx and Theo Loevendie. Beside he studied electronic music with Kees Tazelaar, Jorrit Tamminga and Jos Zwaanenburg. During his studies Bulsink was a church organist and a key board player and arranger with the experimental rock band Magic Fish.


Compositions

At the age of eleven he composed a waltz for the New Year's concert with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble in Amsterdam and in 1997 the ensemble performed two other pieces. In 1999 his composition Ontdekkingen was selected for the Project Young Composers of the Nederlands Balletorkest. Prelude nr. 2 (2003) was selected for a performance during the World Music Days in Ljubljana. In 2006 Bulsink composed in cooperation with Thomas Myrmel the multimedia performance The Expected for 5 singers, ensemble and electronics, based on a short movie of Keren Cytter. In 2007 he wrote Air (an eternal music) for the Nieuw Ensemble (with sho, duduk and qanun). He also wrote some short pieces for piano and for the Ziggurat ensemble. Koranfragment for symphony orchestra was performed in April 2009 with the orchestra of the Amsterdam Conservatorium, conducted by Ed Spanjaard. At the request of the festival November Music he composed together with Thomas Myrmel Pigeonhouse for music theatre (see www.pigeonhouse.nl).


Prizes

In 1998 Wilbert Bulsink won the first prize in the Princess Christina Composition Competition for Prelude no. 1. In 1999 he received the NOG Stimuleringsprijs (encouragement prize) for his orchestral work Ontdekkingen and in 2005 he was awarded the Jan van Vlijmen Prize for young composers. In 2006 he won the Proms in Paradiso Program Prize for The Expected. In 2009 his composition Op/Weg..geblazen for 'luchtpiano' (air piano) and ensemble selected for Toonzetters and in 2010 his composition Koranfragment is selected for Toonzetters 2010.
