Biography Wealthy Beggar

Band that combines various musical styles like electro and hardrock, funk and country, hiphop-beats and '60s pop and jungle beats and Spanish guitars.

1999

Wealthy Beggar starts as a studio project set up by guitarist Tom Sikkers and singer Derrick van Schie. Their self-released debut album is called Muzak For The Mindless. Although the album gets good reviews most critics are under the impression that Wealthy Beggar is a group and not a duo. Reason enough for Sikkers and Van Schie to put together a band.

2000

Wealthy Beggar The self-released Cursing at Biology also gets good reviews. Although critics mark the band as a psychedelic pop group, Sikkers describes the music of Wealthy Beggar as conventional music for the future: songs that are clearly influenced by the '70s, but still have a contemporary, almost futuristic touch. In the autumn the band plays the bigger clubs such as De Effenaar, 013 and Nighttown and also supports Keith Caputo, Das Pop and JJ72.

2001

In August 2001 Wealthy Beggar plays at the Lowlands festival, a highlight in its career so far. The band signs to record company PIAS.

2002

Wealthy Beggar plays in the modern dance production As I Walk. A new studio album, Wealthy Beggar's debut at PIAS, is scheduled for September 2002.

2003

Guitarist Bart Dietvorst quits the band. His new band is 2nd Place Drive. His replacement is Jordi Nieuwenburg. This new guitarist wins the Dutch Air Guitar Championships. In August he competes at the official World Cup in Finland.

2004

Wealthy Beggar Roxxx In The Disco is released on February 16. The album is more commercial than the band's earlier work. The video that goes with the song Reminder is based on the film Reservoir Dogs and guest stars Mighty Mike. The NICAM (Dutch Institute for the Classification of Audio Visual Media) classes the video as too violent and the music stations are only allowed to broadcast it at night. In May Wealthy Beggar plays in Montpellier, France, at the Wanadoo Discovery festival. When The Lost Prophets cancel their show at the Pinkpop festival, Wealthy Beggar takes their place. Drummer Woody quits Wealthy Beggar, as he isn't able any longer to combine playing in the band and his other activities. His replacement is Iwan Wijnen.

2005

During the months February, March and April the band goes into the studio for recordings of their second album. While recording it appears that the band members have irreconcilable musical differences. Reason enough for Wealthy Beggar to call it quits by the end of August. However, future collaborations between various members are a possibility. The band plays a farewell show on September 23 in 013 in Tilburg. Derrick van Schie and Tom Sikkers co-write three tracks on Birgit's new album Sticky Tales. Jordi Nieuwenburg plays guitar in ska punk band Jaya The Cat that originally hails from Boston, MA, but has relocated to Amsterdam

2008

In September Derrick van Schie releases the album The Sun Came Out under the name Dearhunter on the V2 label. Inspired by The Original Soundtrack project, Tom Sikkers forms the rockband Daybroke.
