Biography The Suicidal Birds

Raw, bluesy garagerock from Friesland centred round guitarist and songwriter Jessie L.

2004

Jessie L. plays guitar from the age of ten. With her first band Ragna she makes a name in the local punk and noise scene. After her first band has split, she records her new songs in an old shed in the Frisian country scene.

2005

The Suicidal Birds The CD Dangerous Recordings comes to the attention of the Transformed Dreams label that releases that album early 2005 under the title Z-List. In order to be able to perform the songs live Jessie forms a band with Chay O. (ex-Loes Haasdijk Ensemble) on bass, former Ragna bandmate Sido J. on guitar and Kor on drums. In January the band plays Paradiso. Then Kor is replaced by drummer Roel. The trashy garage blues is often compared with the more heavy work of PJ Harvey. During a European tour in August, September and October The Suicidal Birds play several shows with Dinosaur Jr. in its original line-up in Brussels, Amsterdam and Groningen. The band also plays the Metropolis festival and the Popronde. The Suicidal Birds are doing particularly well in the UK and tracks of the album are frequently played on BBC Radio One. On September 15 The Suicidal Birds cut their first session for One Music on BBC Radio One, the continuation of the famous Peel sessions by DJ John Peel who died in 2004. Despite several successful shows as a fourpiece band, The Suicidal Birds continue as a duo after musical disagreements. Because of this the group is forced to cancel several shows in December. The song Me Animal ends up as number 41 in the Festive Fifty list compiled by the listeners of One Music.

2006

On January 5 in Paradiso The Suicidal Birds can be seen on stage as a duo for the very first time. Jessie L. and Chay O. use a drumcomputer to accompany them. The Paradiso show is followed by gigs at the Eurosonic and Noorderslag festivals. The Suicidal Birds are again invited for a One Music session. On February 15 the duo plays a 30-minute live show in the Maida Vale Studios in London for a selected audience. The show is broadcast on February 21. In the same period The Suicidal Birds also records a session for a show called gLASSsHRiMP broadcast by radio station Resonance FM. The Suicidal Birds work on their second album. In June the duo again tours Holland (among others with Hamburg-based noise duo Bagio) and the UK. Its fourth UK tour includes three shows in London plus concerts in Bristol, Leicester and Norwich.

2007

The Suicidal Birds In January the Suicidal Birds leave the Transformed Dreams label to sign to Rotterdam punk label Tocado. In March the band's second album The Suicidal Birds Versus Life comes out. In September the duo performs at the Popkomm in Berlin. Late November Chay organises the second edition of the Hit The North festival. The bill includes The Suicidal Birds, The Moi Non Plus, Stöma and Pony Pack. On the occasion of the festival a compilation CD comes out with five French and five Dutch bands.

The Moi Non Plus

2009

Third album Spend Your Life In Serious Misery is presented in January with a free show in Groningen preceding the Noorderslag festival weekend. Late February the duo kicks off the first series of European shows in Switzerland.
