Band from the north of the Netherlands that combines '60s UK guitar pop with '90s Britpop.
The Sheer is formed by four friends who have started to write new material and re-arrange old songs. Bart van Liemt, vocalist and most prominent composer, is inspired by UK rock and pop bands from the '60s and Britpop from the early '90s. The result is a catchy combination of melodic pop and rock with a British touch.
The Sheer releases its first demo and in September the 'Meet The Sheer Tour' kicks off. The music press is positive about the demo and the band can be heard on both local and national radio stations. Keyboard player Jasper Geluk also plays with the Dollybirds. During Popslag 2001, a talent show on Radio 3FM, the Sheer reaches second place behind This Beautiful Mess. The band makes its TV debut on music station TMF. The Sheer is also invited for an acoustic 2 Meter session on radio station Kink FM.
The band is invited to play at the 2002 Noorderslag festival. This is followed by a session on Dutch national radio (Club Lek, VPRO radio). Still without a record deal the band kicks off the 'Meet The Sheer 2002 Tour.' It is clear that the band evolved into an energetic rock act. The band receives an Essent Music Award and in August they can be seen at the Lowlands festival.
After several months of delay the Sheer starts recordings for their debut album in July. Producer is Daniel Presley, an American who lives in Paris and who who worked with the likes of Faith No More, Jewel, The Breeders, Cradle Of Filth and Playground. After several days of pre-production in the Netherlands, the Sheer goes to Sweden for three weeks to finish work on their album.
In the spring the band releases the single Something To Say, its Universal debut. The single is released as a limited 7" too. It is followed by the band's debut album The Keyword Is Excitement. In May the Sheer plays at the Pinkpop festival. The band is nominated for an MTV Europe Music Award in the category Best Dutch act.
In January the Sheer plays in the biggest room of the convention centre at the Noorderslag. The show is televised by legendary German TV show Rockpallast. All 'n'all it broadcasts the show three times. The band receives a Silver Harp Award, acknowledging promising new acts. The single Stay Awake is the theme song to the romantic comedy Flirt. Directed by Jaap van Eyck, the film is premiered at Valentine's Day. On March 19 the band gets a 3FM Award in the category Best Newcomer. At the annual Musicians' Day keyboards player Jasper Geluk is awarded as Best Keyboardist and wins a Devil Award, a musicians' musician prize established by the Dutch Rock & Pop Institute. In September the band plays at the Popkomm trade fair in Germany. The Rockpallast broadcasts pay off double, as the reception is beyond expectations. On October 4 the band takes part in Friends For Warchild in the Rotterdam Ahoy' arena. Apart from playing the track Right Now the Sheer teams up with rappers Lange Frans and Baas B for Edwin Starr's hit War. In the tail end of the year the band works on its second CD.
In January they start the recording sessions for second album Feel The Need in the Rooftop Studios. Gordon Groothedde is in the producer's seat. On May 5 leadoff single The Girl That Lost Her Mind Pt.1 comes out. On the very same day - Liberation Day - the 'ambassadors of Freedom' are helicoptered along various Liberation Day festivals across the country (Leeuwarden, Rotterdam, Zwolle and Vlissingen). As of October 2 The Sheer's club tour can be followed through weblogs and videos on music television channel TMF's site.
For the worldwide anti-Aids campaign Make Some Noise, The Sheer cuts John Lennon's Instant Karma. The cover is the flipside of the single All I Forget, released on February 9.
The Sheer starts recordings for a third album. The band is invited by radio station 3FM to play a show on behalf of the European Broadcasting Union at the het Geneva Fan Village during the European Championships football. The Sheer change record company Universal for label PIAS. The band continues working on the new album, again in collaboration with American producer Daniel Presley. JanPeter Hoekstra (ex-Krezip) joins the band.
The songs on third album Here And Now And Long Before are more personal. The album features a sound that is more melancholic and more Americana than the band's earlier material. After five try-outs the official presentation of the album takes place on 16 April at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. The realisation of the album is filmed by filmmaker Jorn van der Putte and can be seen in a short documentary shown by TV station BNN. The Sheer cancels all shows until the end of the year because singer Bart van Liemt gets a kidney transplant.
Bart van Liemt is recovering from the surgery. The band plays its last show in Haarlem before starting to write material for a new album.
