Biography The New Earth Group

The New Earth Group is an instrumental ensemble from Rotterdam. The band mixes a wide range of musical styles, such as jazz, Afro pop, punk rock, funk, fusion and dub. They take their inspiration from artists and bands like Frank Zappa, Fela Kuti, John McLaughlin, Jimi Hendrix, Weather Report, The Mars Volta, King Crimson and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Their successful performance at the 2009 Noorderslag festival is released on CD. Their third album Eurafricarabia is nominated for the 2010 Edison audience award in the Jazz/World category.

1991 - 2007

Saxophonist Choca Alcazaba and guitarist Vincent Matthias van Duin play together in various bands for years, including New Friend, The Solo Men Only, Mega Vs. Giga and the stoner improv octet De Vogels. When De Vogels disband Alcazaba and Van Duin start The New Earth Group in 2007. The band records the eponymous debut album in their own, self-built studio in Rotterdam. Drummer Robin Schaeverbeke, musician and filmmaker Jeroen Rozendaal (Room 101) and photographer and bassist Menno Bouma (Mono) complete the band.

2008

The album is released by Willie Anderson Recordings, best known for releases by guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López (The Mars Volta) and Monotonix. The band gives its first concert at the album presentation at the Rotterdam Lantaren/Venster in January. The New Earth Group gives shows at various festivals, and puts in some illegal guerrilla performances, including one at a parking lot during the Metropolis Festival at het Rotterdam Zuiderpark and outside the door of the Rotterdam Ahoy' during the North Sea Jazz Festival.

2009

The show at the Groningen Noorderslag festival in January is recorded on the album Tam Boe Man. The richer group sound is the result of percussionist Jasper Den Dulk's polyrhythmic contributions. In between performances at the Terschelling Oerol festival (featuring a guest performance by trumpeter Eric Vloeimans), Metropolis, the North Sea Jazz Festival and State X Choca Alcazaba releases a solo album. He performs tunes from this album with the Choca Alcazaba Quartet, which features Van Duin, bassist Jos Hoevenaars and drummer Jasper den Dulk. In the summer The New Earth Group starts recording its third album. The release of the CD is postponed when the Excelsior label shows interest in the band.
