Death metal band that transforms into a symphonic rock band.
Brothers Hans and René Rutten and Bart Smits form The Gathering.
The band releases its debut album Always. The album gets good reviews from the press and the band is asked to support Faith No More when they play Ahoy' Rotterdam.
After several personnel changes the band starts recordings for the new album Almost A Dance.
The Gathering makes a surprising comeback with the album Mandylion. Classically trained vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen now fronts the band, which had always featured female singers in its previous line-ups. They have successfully moved away from death metal towards symphonic rock, gothic and psychedelics. The single Strange Machines enters the Top 40.
The Gathering goes on an extensive tour of the Benelux, Germany and Switzerland and in the autumn they go into the studio to record a new album.
The album Nighttime Birds comes out. The band plays the Pinkpop festival and the Roskilde festival in Denmark.
The band's fifth album is a double CD called How To Measure A Planet? The Gathering tours through the US, Mexico and the UK.
The Gathering starts a record label: Psychonaut Records. In November the band's first two albums Always and Almost A Dance are re-released.
The live album Superheat is released followed by a new studio album If...Then...Else.
The CD Downfall: The Early Years is released. The album contains several demos and a previously unreleased 7" single, all from the period 1990/1991, and a CD-ROM. The band tours Mexico and plays for the second time in its career at Denmark's Roskilde festival.
Without the band's permission Century Media releases the DVD In Motion. The new EP Black Light District marks a new musical direction for the band, which incorporates alternative rock influences.
After two years the Gathering has finished the new album Souvenirs, which is released on their own Psychonaut label, first in Europe on February 24 and then in the rest of the world on March 12. The 10-track album is produced by Zlaya Hadzich (Sonic Youth, Motorpsycho, Low and Agrésion). As of March the band tours through Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. In May they touch home base again. In May the band tours the Benelux countries after which they go to Poland and the UK. In the autumn a tour of the US and South America is scheduled. The single You Learn About It is released in April. The band is invited to play at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK. The Gathering also plays two acoustic gigs in Nijmegen. The shows are recorded and released on CD. In September they band plays at the first edition of Amsterdam Calling during the In The City conference in Manchester. In November the band announces the recruitment of a new bass player, Marjolein Kooijman, a student at Tilburg-based Rock Academy. As of February 2004, around the release of the band's new semi acoustic live-album Sleepy Buildings, Kooijman will debut on stage. She is to replace Hugo Prinsen who quits the band for private reasons. Prinsen's farewell gig is in Tilburg's 013 on November 16.
In February The Gathering tours the Americas, including Chili and Mexico. Late May the band leaves for Russia for the first time and on May 29 they play at club DK Gorbunova. Russian label Irond Records releases a split-CD with two Gathering EP's: Black Light District (2002) and Monsters (2003). The band also plays Greece, France, Germany and Hungary. In June the band plays at the Parkpop festival in The Hague. In August the Gathering appears at the Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary
Along the same lines as live album Sleepy Buildings the Gathering cuts a live-DVD (A Sound Relief) at Paradiso Amsterdam on May 23. It's the bands sole gig of the year, as singer Anneke van Giersbergen is a mother now. In the meantime, Century Media label releases the CD Accessories, a double album containing B-sides and rarities. The tenth anniversary of the album Mandylion is celebrated with the release of a special deluxe edition. This special deluxe edition of Mandylion features a new cover design, a 16-page booklet containing information about each track and pictures that were shot during the recording of the album. The second CD features the first demos that the band recorded in June 1994 and early 1995 with Anneke van Giersbergen. For the recording of their ninth studio album Home, the band works with producer Atti Bauw. Hans Rutten can also be heard on the debut album of Dutch band Drive By Wire.
In February bassist Marjolein Kooijman graduates from the rock academy. The album Home is released in April on Sanctuary Records. The band receives an Edison music award for the DVD A Sound Relief. The Gathering travels to South America and also performs at the renowned SXSW festival, in Austin, Texas, followed by a North-American tour. The band's US label is The End. Due to illness of singer Anneke The Gathering's European tour is cancelled. At the Musicians Day on May 27 at Amsterdam's Melkweg, Anneke van Giersbergen wins a Devil (musicians to musicians) Award (established by the Dutch Rock & Pop Institute) in the category Best Female Singer. In August the Gathering and Green Lizard play at Hungary's Sziget festival. Especially for this occasion they release a free limited edition split single (5.000 copies) for the punters. The single is a co-production of MusicXport.nl and I Scream Records. Anneke van Giersbergen sings on two tracks - Weltschmerz and In Deference - on the new album Smear Campaign by UK band Napalm Death.
After a show on May as headliner in New York's Club Rebel The Gathering embarks on a two-week Northern America tour supporting Italy's Lacuna Coil. Back in Europe there are some festivals scheduled: Artmania in Romania (June), Benátská Noc in the Czech Republic (July) and Ankkarock in Finland (August). The Gathering's show during Ankkarock on 4 August is the band's last one with Anneke van Giersbergen. In June the singer announces that she is leaving The Gathering to form new band Agua de Annique. The rest of the group works with different vocalists on a new album which is scheduled for release in 2008. A Noise Severe is part of show The Gathering has played in Teatro Caupolican Santiago, Chili, on 24 March 2007. The show is released both as a CD and a double DVD.

Frank Boeijen contributes to the album This Ain't Hollywood by Silence Is Sexy. He then joins the band as a fifth band member. The album Downfall from 2001 is re-released in September with seven previously unreleased tracks. The mastering is done by Mike Wead from King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. Bass player René Rutten joins the line-up of Dutch band Drive By Wire.
In April The Gathering returns with the release of the band's ninth studio album, The West Pole. The album is produced by guitarist René Rutten. The band describes the album as being rock-oriented an extravert. Guest vocalists include Anne van den Hoogen and Mexican singer Marcela Bovio. The West Pole also presents The Gathering's new singer Silje Wergeland from Norwegian band Octavia Sperati. The Gathering celebrates its twentieth anniversary with Dutch club tour and a European tour. Former band member Hugo Prinsen Geerligs joins the band on several occasions during the European tour to replace temporary bass player Marjolein Kooijman.
