Biography Tee-set

'60s rhythm & blues band, which had a worldwide hit with Ma Belle Amie. Tee-Set is also the first Dutch band to start its own record label.

1965

Tee-Set is formed in the city of Delft by singer Peter Tetteroo, Gerard Romeyn (bass), Polle Eduard (guitar), Carry Janssen (drums) and Robbie Plazier (keyboards).

The Shats

1966

Tee-Set's debut album, Emotion, is released. In august they have their first hit single: Early In The Morning.

1967

A troublesome year for Tee-Set. They are joined by guitarist Ray Fenwick (formerly Gene Vincent, Chrispian St. Peters). Although success continues, Fenwick, Van Eijck and Eduard decide to leave and form a new band called After Tea. Tetteroo continues Tee-Set with a new line-up. The band also starts its own record company. The first single to be released on Tee-Set Records is Now's The Time.

1968

The band has a small hit with This Rose In My Hand. It shows the band's new sound, which has transformed from rhythm & blues to a more open, middle-of-the-road kind of pop style. Join The Tea Set, the band's new album, is released.

1969

Tee-Set scores a huge hit with Ma Belle Amie.

1970

In the spring, Ma Belle Amie goes to number five in the US charts. In the autumn the album In The Morning Of My Days is released. Taken from the album is the single She Likes Weeds, which becomes the band's only number one hit. Because the song is regarded as a song about drugs, it is boycotted in the US. The true story behind it, however, is that it is based on a dialogue from the Michael Caine film The Ipcress File in which Michael Caine points out to his boss the enormous amount of weed in his garden. His response to Caine is that his wife likes them: 'She likes weeds, they're easy to grow.'

1971

Although Tee-Set cannot keep up its international success, their songs keep appearing in the Dutch Top 20: In Your Eyes, Little Lady, A Sunny Day In Greece, Shotguns, Mary Mary, The Bandstand and Do It Baby, are hits for the band in the early 1970s.

1975

Interest in the band is fading.

1979

Tee-Set has a hit with the light-hearted Linda Linda.

1983

The single Tribute To The Spencer Davis Group is released.

Swinging Soul Machine

1996

Dutch music programme Single Luck shows Peter Tetteroo performing his songs at fairs and other similar events. It is clear that he and his Tee-Set colleagues have not become rich with their music.

2002

Tetteroo is elected in the city council of his hometown Delft. On September 9 he dies of liver cancer. In the local council his former Tee-Set peer Polle Eduard fills his seat.

2003

On Saturday September 13 tribute concert for Peter Tetteroo is being held. Performing artists include Anita Meyer, Polle Eduard, Sweetypants, The Ladies, Ferry Windsant, Ray Fenwick, Mark Boon, the Gospel and Soul Choir Elias and Barbershop group The Music Man. The proceeds of the concert go to charity.

2004

The Voice of a Singer, an exposition paying tribute to Peter Tetteroo/Tee-Set, is organised by the Rock & Art Hall of Fame Holland Foundation in Delft in September and October.

2011

Emotion (1966), the first album of sixties rhythm & blues band Tee-set, will be rereleased in a remastered version by label Pseudonym.
