Biography Speedy J

One of the most successful and most respected Dutch dance producers.

1982

Jochem Paap starts experimenting with tape loops and DJ-ing.

1987

Because of his high-speed scratch techniques Paap is nicknamed Speedy J.

1988

Paap sends one of his tapes to the Canadian +8 label. They like his work and release several successful Speedy J EPs.

1990

Speedy J is one of the first dance producers to play live. To his own amazement the single Pullover becomes a worldwide hit.

1993

Ginger, Speedy J's, debut album, is greeted with much enthusiasm. The CD is released on Speedy's BMU (Beam me up!) label. Internationally it's out on Warp and +8.

1994

With BMU bands Sensurreal and the Human Beings Speedy J tours in The Netherlands. He also remixes tracks for acts like the Shamen, Bjork and Sven Vath.

1995

Speedy J's DJ set at the Pinkpop festival is released on the CD !ive. The track Pepper is released as a single and later in the year the album G-spot comes out.

1996

Speedy J remixes Stefan Robbers' Moonbeak.

1997

Paap shocks the house scene with the release of his comeback CD Public Energy no. 1 and the single Ni Go Snix. The album is released on NovaMute and +8 and critics call it a masterpiece. In the summer Paap plays at the Glastonbury festival.

1998

Paap records the sound design for the film Souvenir by Michael Shamberg.

1999

The single Ieee Mitten Menu is released.

2000

Speedy J performs with Japanese computer graphics artist Daizaburo Harada in Paradiso in Amsterdam. On his new website www.speedyj.com fans can jam with Speedy J samples. The album A Shocking Hobby is quite experimental, featuring beats and soundscapes.

2001

Van Slagboom van Loon, the project by Jochem Paap and the UK's Mike Paradinas releases an album featuring remixes by Boards of Canada, Pole, Four Tet, Coil and Matmos.

2002

Speedy J releases the single Kreck as an appetiser for the June-released album Loudboxer. The album is significantly less experimental than A Shocking Hobby. It's back to the old danceable four four rhythm of latter day Speedy J. On the track Hayfever on the Perspective Fragments sampler (out on the Belgian label U-Cover), the duo Funckarma samples a great deal from Speedy J's Public Energy album.

With Maurice Spijkers Speedy J starts the new Sweatboxer club night in Rotterdam's Las Palmas club. It is meant to become a very basic club night focusing on great music on an amazing location with an absolutely spotless sound system. He uses the uncompromising Funktion-one equipment as developed in the UK. Collabs 100, recorded with Adam Beyer, is the first of a series of new albums, featuring friends, to be released.

2004

With Germany's Chris Liebing he produces the 12" Collabs 300, the first of a series of collective EP's for the UK's dance label Novamute.

2005

The collaboration with Liebing is followed up with the 70-minute rather industrial album Metalism, featuring techno beats and heavy rhythms, mixed together with dark ambient.

2006

The EPs Collabs 400 and Collabs 401 feature a collaboration with George Issakidis (ex-The Micronauts) from Paris

2007

The DVD Umfeld (October) is a co-production with American video artist Scott Pagano and features a combination audio in 5.1. surround and abstract graphical images.
