Biography Soesja Citroen

Soesja Citroen (The Hague, 25 September 1948) is the daughter of a composer and a father who (until 1967) has a position with the Residentie Orkest (The Hague Philharmonic). Billie Holiday is her idol while still at grammar school. She starts singing, coached and accompanied by trumpeter and pianist Nedly Elstak, during jazz & poetry happenings, and in jazzclubs in Delft and Amsterdam, in 1964. She interrupts her singing career for a social psychology study, but in 1979 she takes up singing again, encouraged by Elstak. Citroen distinguishes herself from most of her colleagues by her preference for original material. Her command of the English language stands out in this. Early in her career her style evolves from 'experimental' to the 'classical' song model.
