Biography Rudi Martinus van Dijk

1932 - 2003

Rudi Martinus van Dijk was born on March 27, 1932 in Culemborg. He died on November 29, 2003 in East Sussex, England.

Musical education
He studied composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague with Léon Orthel and Hendrik Andriessen. In 1953 he emigrated to Canada. In 1955 he studied with Roy Harris in Los Angeles and later composition with Max Deutsch in Paris. In London he continued piano studies with Kendall Taylor.


Activities

He worked in the 50's and 60's as composer and pianist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. From 1964 to 1966 Van Dijk worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation in London. Returning to Canada he was appointed teacher of piano and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In 1972 he became teacher of composition and orchestration at the University of Indiana (USA) and in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. In 1985 he returned to Europe and after spending a year in Spain he took up residence in England, becoming composer in residence at Dartington Hall. He lived in The Netherlands and England alternately and devoted nearly all his time to composing.


Compositions

The premiere in Holland of his Concerto for violin and orchestra (1984) was played by Robert Szreder with the Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Stulen in September 1991 at the Flanders Music Festival. The well known baritone Victor Braun performed The Shadowmaker (1978) in London. The Irish Symphony (1990) is dedicated to the conductor Colman Pearce. The oratorio Kreiten's Passion was premièred in Düsseldorf, Germany on September 16, 2003 with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker.


Prizes

In 1953 his Sonatina for piano was performed during the International Gaudeamus Week. In 1962 and 1963 Van Dijk received the Ohio Award for Background Music.
