Biography Rude Rich And The High Notes

Ten-piece Dutch band that plays authentic Jamaican ska and rocksteady.

1997

Rude Rich and the Highnotes are formed by drummer Richard Jager and keyboard player Peter Klaasen. Both are very much into authentic ska, rocksteady and reggae, as it was played on Jamaica in the '60s.

Inity Mr. Review Revelation Time

1998

Klaasen and Jager record an eight-track demo, which they send to other, like-minded, musicians. First rehearsals of the band are in February and two months later the band plays its first gig. The other musicians are double bass player Nico Maruanaya, singer Tobias Breekveldt, percussionist Karel Burgos and guitarist Waldi van Kogelenberg. Later in the year they are joined by sax player Thomas Streutgers.

1999

Rude Rich are joined by sax player Paul Berding, guitarist Bob van Houten and Rob 'The Saxman'. In April the group's self-released debut The Right Track comes out and gets good reviews. In August the band plays at the Lowlands festival.

2000

The band plays at the Noorderslag festival.

2001

The second album Change The Mood is released on the German Grover label. Guest musician on the album is Jamaican trombonist Rico Rodriguez, who during the first ska revival in the '70s played with the Specials.

2002

At the This Is Ska Festival in Rosslau, Germany, the band is backing band to Jamaican veteran Derrick Morgan. He recommends Rude Rich to his peer Alton Ellis, who on his turn invites the band to become his backing band at four shows in Holland in November.

2003

Bassist co-founder Nico Maruanaya quits the band. His replacement is Boudewijn 'Boss' van Trigt. In February they are backing band of Rico Rodriguez on a short Benelux tour.

2004

Rude Rich And The High Notes On March 13 Rude Rich and the High Notes present the album Soul Stomp. The album is released internationally via the German label Grover Records. In the Benelux the album is released via the band's own label Rude Rich Records, in cooperation with Boombax Music.

2005

Rude Rich and the High Notes accompanies three legendary Jamaican veterans at the Sunsplash Festival in Wiesen, Austria. Rude Rich and the High Notes, U Brown, Dennis Alcapone and Alton Ellis play a two-hour gig.

The Upsessions

2006

During the annual Dutchska festival at the Melkweg in Amsterdam recordings are made for a DVD together with ska legend Winston Francis. In the spring the band travels to France for a show at the Léoska Festival in Leognan. Later in the year, Rude Rich And The High Notes is support act for The Skatalites. Winston Francis releases his 12'' Mr Fix on the band's label.

2007

Rude Rich And The High Notes again headlines the Dutchska festival at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. The band is also headliner at the Swiss Skarau festival. Rude Rich And The High Notes is backing band for Derrick Morgan during the Belgian festival Reggae Geel. Guitarist Bob van Houten and guitarist Gerben Rienk Visser (Mark Foggo) form Skaguitar, a band that features influences by Bob Marley, Joe Satriani and Django Reinhardt. Double bass player Marcus de Vin leaves the band after three years. He is replaced by bass player Biko. The album Derrick Morgan Meets The High Notes In Amsterdam is released on the band's own label. Rico Rodriguez and Sistah Benji contribute to the album. Trumpet player Ruud Kleiss also plays in soul/beat/exotica band The Spinshots.

2009

Rude Rich And The High Notes convince Dennis Alcapone to come to the Benelux countries for some shows in Amstelveen (30 January) and Turnhout (31 January). The classic Jamaican toaster Alcapone has worked with the likes of Prince Buster and producers Keith Hudson, Lee Perry and Joe Gibbs. In May saxophone player Thomas Streutgers, alias Tommy Tornado, releases his solo album Sunrise. Guests on the album include Rude Rich & The Highnotes, and international reggae artists like Rico Rodriguez, Ernest Ranglin, Winston Reedy, Winston Mr. Fix It Francis and Dennis Alcapone.
