Biography Rob Goorhuis

Rob Goorhuis was born in 1948 in Amsterdam.

Musical Education
His music education began at the age of thirteen with organist Bernard Bartelink. At the conservatory of music he has obtained diplomas for piano, organ (cum laude), choral conducting and music theory. For a number of years he also studied orchestral conducting with Paul Hupperts.


Activities

In addition to composing, Goorhuis has also been active for many years as conductor of various choirs and orchestras, in concert form but also in radio and television broadcasts. He conducted the Utrechts Accompanying Orchestra for several years. He also worked with the SNK (an organisation of Dutch Choirs) on conducting courses. Rob Goorhuis has performed regulary as an organis, solo and as a basso continuo player with choirs and orchestras. For many years his was the basso continuo palayrer for the Utrechts Barok Consort. He is also active as jury member by solo competitions and competitions for wind orchestras in Nederland, including the World Music Music Competition in Kerkrade, the Dutch Brass Band Championships in Zutphen, The Swiss Open Contest and The World Band Festival in Luzern.


Compositions

In 1977 he was commissioned by the Ministry of Culture to write a piece for wind band, resulting in Concertino voor fanfare. Since then he has received several commissions to compose for wind bands, e.g. from the Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (Governmental fund for the creation of music) and the Organisatie Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen (Organisation of The Netherlands Brass Band Competition).


Prizes

In 2003 Goorhuis received the Gerard Boedijn Medal.
