Biography Pieter van der Staak

Pieter van der Staak was born on May 25, 1930 in The Hague. He died on November 2, 2007.


Education

From 1955 to 1959 he studied guitar with Andrés Segovia and Alirio Diaz. With Emilio Pujol he studied the vihuela and ancient music notation. He studied composition with Wolfgang Wijdeveld. He also studied the guitar with Hans Lutz Niessen at the Conservatory of Music in Maastricht.


Activities

For many years he was a senior guitar teacher at the municipal Conservatory of Music in Zwolle. As a guitar player he performed solo, with Willy Brill (voice) and with Maria Hol (violoncello) all over the world. He was initiator of the International Guitar Weeks in Zwolle.


Compositions

He has composed a lot of chamber music, among which works for string quartet, clarinet quintet and cello trio. Besides compositions for cello ensemble and accordion orchestra, he has written music for less common combinations such as guitar, flute and clarinet. He wrote many compositions for guitar teaching, published by Ars Nova (Sweden), Hortensia (Paris), Suvini Zerboni (Milano) and Broekmans & Van Poppel (Amsterdam).
