Biography Oil

Oil is a punk rock group, which members come from Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The band soon develops its own particular sound which features influences from Sonic Youth, the early hardcore from Washington DC and The Stooges. Oil can be found more often playing abroad (both Europe and the US) than in the Netherlands.

1997

Oil starts out as a four-piece band. Only six weeks after the band has formed they release their first, untitled, 7" on a label called Commitment Records.

1998

One year after Oil has formed the band is recording new songs. Drummer Marcel Wiebenga and Robin van der Kaa have joined the band. Better Get It In Your Soul is released as a limited edition (300 copies) single-sided 12" on the label Little People Records.

2001

Oil's 11-track debut album Definition Delta, which is released both on CD and vinyl, comes out in the spring via Coalition Records. The band's sound features influences by Fugazi and At The Drive-In and also some electronics. Oil goes on an extensive European tour and three smaller international tours. The band supports the likes of Henry Rollins and Therapy? and also plays the Metropolis festival in Rotterdam.

2002

Oil Late February Oil travels to Britain for four shows. In March and April the band goes on an extensive tour of Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Sweden and Norway. In August the band travels to Spain, Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic. The EP Better Get It In Your Soul is re-released as a 7" single via the small Peter Walkee Records label from Albany, New York. In the meantime, Oil is working on new material while listening to Led Zeppelin. In December the band starts recordings for the Electric Tongue EP.

NRA

2003

Drummer Marcel Wiebenga also plays in the European/American band Das Oath. Electric Tongue contains four new songs plus a cover song from Dutch band Deadstoolpigeon. In Europe the record is released via Coalition Records and in the US via Level Plane. In April, May and June Oil and NRA tour France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In September and October Oil and Feverdream tour the Netherlands under the name Revolution 10. On 14 October Oil's US tour kicks off in Albany, New York. The tour ends in New York City on 25 October with a free gig at the Lit Lounge. Late December Oil records four new songs.

2004

Oil Oil plays at the Noorderslag festival in January. Jasper Uhl and Robin van der Kaa form the David Gilmour Girls, who concentrate on things like producing, remixing (for bands like the Riplets), graphic design, web design and DJ-ing. Arnoud van der Zijden also plays in a band called The Solo Men Only. Shortly after the release of their debut album Hot Shit he leaves the band. Mid July Oil starts recordings for a new album with their producer Menno Bakker. In October Oil again goes to the States for a lengthy tour and also plays the renowned CMJ Festival in New York. Totally unexpected the band breaks up in December.
