A 'modern dance orchestra for the youth' that combines Latin rhythms and jazz, DJ beats, '60s jazz, easy tune and triphop beats.
Musician Benjamin Herman and DJ Graham B meet and form New Cool Collective. In 1995 the group releases a 12" and tours the Dutch clubs and festivals like the North Sea Jazz festival in 1996. Then follows the release of a second 12".
The group's full-length debut, Soul Jazz Latin Flavours Nineties Vibe, is supported by a tour through the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg and of course the Netherlands.
Highlights of this year include a performance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and a short tour through Britain (Leeds, London and Edinburgh Fringe Festival). The second album, More Soul Jazz Latin Flavours Nineties Vibe, is released.
In the autumn the big band version of New Cool Collective, consisting of 20 musicians, releases its full-length debut. Vocal guests are Georgie Fame and Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis. The album receives an Edison music award in 2000. Other highlights are performances at the Camden Mix Festival and the Aberdeen Alternative Festival in 1999 and tours through South Africa, Germany and Britain in 2000. The band also receives a Gouden Notenkraker award.

Invited by the Dutch Embassy and various local organisations, the band embarks on a trip to Uganda. Between April 29 and May 3 the band plays four concerts in clubs and on outdoor stages in capital Kampala.
New Cool Collective contributes to cabaret artist Paul de Leeuw's new album Duizel Mij ('Dazzle Me'). Anton Goudsmit participates on the project Voer ('Food'), which marries acoustic music, jazz, Iranian, Indian, improvised and composed music with electronics. Apart from Goudsmit, Voer consists of vocalist Vera Van der Poel (Mimezine), percussionist Afra Mussawisade (Bayuba Cante), Oene van Geel (Zapp String Quartet), Gulli Gudmundsson (Sonic Unit) and Robert van Heumen. On the side bassist Leslie Lopez starts playing with Moroccan/Cuban group Black Tulip. Early June New Cool Collective travels to Russia for shows in the Street Life Club in St. Petersburg and LeClub in Moscow. New Cool Collective plays at Denmark's Roskilde festival (June 30-July 3) and Sziget in Hungary in August. Together with Tony Allen he appears live at Lowlands. On 15 August the double album Trippin' is released. The bonus CD contains five tracks with Tony Allen. Benjamin Herman releases his solo CD The Itch.

The New Cool Collective Big Band plays at the Noorderslag festival. Several days later band leader Benjamin Herman receives the VPRO/Boy Edgar Award. The jury thinks Herman is the 'exemplary jazz musician: open, inquisitive, energetic and committed. Typical for him is his drive, a excellent technique and perfect tone'. The saxophonist gets his prize officially on April 26 in Amsterdam's jazz Mecca, the Bimhuis. The Freestyle label releases New Cool Collective's 12" single The Trip. Benjamin Herman is featured on two tracks of DJ Maestro's debut album Mesmerize. Also, he plays on the CD Cashmere Cat by the Easy Aloha's. With trombonist Louk Boudesteijn (Tasha's World) and trumpeter Jan van Duikeren amongst others he accompanies Paul Weller at his show at North Sea Jazz in Rotterdam.
Benjamin Herman contributes to Reboot Your Soul, the solo debut by trumpeter Rob van de Wouw (Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra), which is released by the end of January. Additionally, he plays on the double album The World Over by Eric van der Westen's Quadrant Extended. At the end of April New Cool Collective Big Band releases a live album. The CD, arranged by keyboardist Willem Friede, contains less boogaloo but more Afro-beat.
The New Cool Collective Big Band plays the theatres with the show Jungle Book as part of Rocket Cinema. The 19-piece band accompanies the Disney live. During the Festival Mundial New Cool Collective performs with Kenian group Mapacha Africa. NCC has met the African band before, during a visit to Nairobi. Rico and Sticks (Fakkelbrigade, ex-Opgezwolle) also turn up. Seventh album Out Of Office has a more cinematic sound and also features rock influences.
