Biography

Trend setting Belgian-born lounge DJ.

1982 - 1995

Between 1982 and 1995 Belgian-born Jan van den Bergh (Monte La Rue) works as an A&R manager for several record companies. In 1990 he starts working for the dance label R&S, where he gets involved with Detroit techno. Besides his job as an A&R manager, he also works in several clubs in Antwerp and Brussels.

1996

Van den Bergh moves to Amsterdam where he starts record company Trust Foundations. He makes his debut as a DJ at the second edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event. From that moment on he is better known as Monte La Rue: founding father and best-known DJ of the lounge genre.

1997 - 1999

In 1999 La Rue can be seen at the Lowlands festival. He also performs at the Hugo Boss party in Rotterdam and the New York Milk Factory. His first release is Lounge Deluxe in 1999. Most noticeable is the fact that during his DJ sets he makes use of two Pioneer CD-500 CD players instead of the usual Technics SL-1200 turntables.

2000

The second part of the Lounge Deluxe is released in the summer. Van den Bergh starts the Cinq Etoiles label. The double compilation NL-Compilation is the label's first release. 2000 proves to be a very successful year for Monte La Rue. He performs at the Lowlands, Drum Rhythm and Sensation festivals.

2001

Monte La Rue starts the year with a new compilation series: Latin Deluxe. Subtropicbeachclubbing, compiled by La Rue, is released in the summer. In August part three of Lounge Deluxe is released. By the end of the year Cinq Etoiles comes with another series, titled Stories, on which new talent gets a chance to present themselves. Monte La Rue performs at Sensation and the PopKomm convention in Germany.

2002

La Rue peforms at Innercity in Amsterdam. In February part two of Latin De Luxe is released under the name Dia em Noite (Day Into Night). The album Interludia contains 13 tracks on which lounge, downbeat and pop music are combined. One of the people who have contributed to the album is Alex Cortiz.

Deluxe 2 For Your Pleasure is the label's second lounge sampler on the label, featuring album closer For Your Pleasure by Monte La Rue plus contributions by producers from Russia, the US and Denmark.

2005

Monte La Rue kicks off the year with a striking one-off with jazz pianist Louis van Dijk at the posh Chalet Royal. He also takes care of the music at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week. Each Thursday night he's on the Club NL bill.
