Biography Moke

Moke is a Britpop-oriented band consisting of ex-members of Supersub, Tröckener Kecks and Flemming.

2005 - 2006

Moke is founded by Felix Maginn, singer/guitarist from the band Supersub. The band's name is a corruption of Mokum (Amsterdam), but it is also the name of Maginn's Irish uncle. Other band members include guitarist Phillip Tilli (Tröckener Kecks), keyboard player Eddy Steeneken (Flemming), drummer Rob Klerkx (Supersub) and bassist Marcin Felis. Moke is good friends with former Jam frontman Paul Weller. It is Weller who invites the band in December 2006 to come to the UK and be the opening act for two of his shows at The Forum in London.

2007

Moke In February Moke signs a recording deal with PIAS. In March first single Last Chance is released. An interview and an appearance in Dutch daily TV (talk) show De Wereld Draait Door generates loads of attention for the band. In March, during the London Calling festival in Paradiso, Amsterdam, Moke's debut album Shorland comes out. In the spring Last Chance is used during the Dutch broadcasts of Champions League games. The video of Here Comes The Summer can be seen regularly on MTV (it is at number one for six weeks consecutively in MTV's Brand New chart). In June 2007 the band receives an Essent Award music award and can consequently be seen at the Lowlands festival in August. Moke is nominated for an MTV Border Breaking Award and also plays at the MTV stage during the Amsterdam UITmarkt. The band also plays at the Footballer Of The Year Gala, which is broadcast live in front of an audience of over one million and a half people. They meet their soccer hero Johan Cruijff. In October it is announced that the band will be dressed by none other than the famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. On stage, the band is almost always dressed entirely in black. Lagerfeld's new, fashionable line of clothes is a brand that wishes to identify itself with cool music and its target group is young people. Moke is one of the acts that should promote Lagerfeld's clothing line along with Belgium's dEUS and Vive La Fête plus the UK's Razorlight and the US's Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In November they win the prize for Best Dressed Dutch Band from the Dutch version of Esquire Magazine. More importantly, the album is since its release in March constantly in the album charts and passed the 10.000 sales mark in November 2007. By that time the band is on a nationwide sold-out tour, highlighted by another Paradiso show (their third in the main room that year) on Boxing Day plus another Christmas show at Utrecht's Tivoli On December 29.

2008

Moke writes the title song Heart Without A Home for Dutch film TBS. Director Pieter Kuijpers is also director of the accompanying video. On 30 May Moke plays the Pinkpop festival. On the occasion of this event a special festival edition of debut album Shorland is released which includes a studio album, a dual disc with audio recordings of a show in Paradiso, Amsterdam, and a remix by Don Diablo, plus a DVD with videos and live footage shoot during the Noorderslag festival. In Hamburg, Germany, Moke signs licensing contract with the German branch of record company Play It Again Sam (PIAS) for the release of debut album in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. On 2 October, a European tour as support act for Paul Weller is kicked off. The tour will take the band to the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Spain. The band also performs at the Popkomm music conference in Berlin and is support act for British band Keane in Berlin, Koln and Munich.

2009

In May and July, Moke plays several acoustic shows featuring only a basic line-up of the band: Felix Maginn, Phil Tilli and Eddy Steeneken completed with a string quartet. On 1 June, Moke goes into the ICP Studios in Brussels to start working on a new album. Moke and Junkie XL can both be seen in a commercial for beer brand Grolsch. In July, both acts perform live on the roof of a building in downtown Amsterdam. After the release of second album The Long And Dangerous Sea, Moke kicks off an extensive club tour of the Netherlands. Rock photographer Anton Corbijn shoots the album cover and is involved as art director. The cover design is by The Stone Twins. The band gets a gold record for debut album Shorland which has sold over 30.000 copies by now.
