Biography Martijn Voorvelt

Martijn Voorvelt was born on December 20, 1967.

Education/background
Voorvelt is a musicologist. In 1992, he graduated from the University of Amsterdam and in 1998, he graduated from the University of Leeds with a dissertation on British experimental and pop music from the period 1977-1983. As a composer he is self-educated. In 1992, his first works were performed:Septet and Halcyones. In 1997, he was participant at the Young Composer's Meeting in Apeldoorn, where he met other type-setters of its generation. With some of them he started the concert serial concerts up to and including. Voorvelt are also singer-songwriter and play in several link.


Compositions

His works have performed in various countries and at festivals like the Gaudeamus Music Week (1995) - Dundee Guitar Festival (1998, Scotland) - Wetterfest Wien (2001, Austria) and the ISCM World Music Days (2002, Hong Kong). Voorvelt also collaborates with theater makers (including: De moed om te doden [2002]), choreographers (o.a. Molinari Modules [1996]) and visual artists (Bridge Modules [2000]). In 2004 he received an opdracht from the Foundation on the Creation of Music for his Second String Quartet Four Parts which he composed for the Zephyr Kwartet.


Publications

Voorvelt has published articles in Organized Sound, Mens en Melodie, Journal of New Music Theory, Muziek en Wetenschap (Music and Science) and the internet magazine Perfect Sound Forever. Additionally he has written program notes for the Holland Festival Daily Newspaper and Intrada, among others.


Prijzen

In 1994 he received the EOE-Stock Prize from the Oskar Back Foundation for his comosition Raging, Building for violin and piano. This was a compulsary work for the National Violin Concours 1995. In 2002 he received, thanks to the performance of his string quartet 4/4 in Hong Kong, a commission from the ISCM.
