Biography Martijn Lenoble

Martijn LeNoble is a bassist from the province of South Holland who moves to Los Angeles and embarks upon an international career in music, playing the bass guitar in bands like Porno For Pyros, Jane's Addiction and The Cult. He plays at recording session for such diverse artists like Maria McKee, Marianne Faithfull, Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) and Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine).

1985 - 1988

Martijn LeNoble (Vlaardingen, 14 April 1969) plays in various bands, including Detonator en Cry The Tearing (in which Dick Schulte Nordholt also plays bass for a while). During his stint in Amsterdam School, Bram van Diem and Bert Boot's band, he gets involved in a relationship with an American model.

1989 - 1991

When his American girlfriend returns to the States in 1989, LeNoble follows her. In the first week of his stay in Los Angeles he meets many well-known American musicians. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea brings him into contact with the band Thelonious Monster, which is looking for a bass player after Rob Graves' death. LeNoble gets the job. Besides performing with Thelonious Monster, he plays at recording sessions and performs with The Too Free Stooges.

1992 - 1997

Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction) asks the bassist to join the band Porno For Pyros. The expectations in the American music press are high, and their untitled debut album enters the Billboard charts at number 1 in 1993. The band's only Dutch gig is as support act to Neil Young at the Rotterdam Ahoy' in 1993. LeNoble buys a house in Malibu and starts living a life of excess that seem to come with the success. When his drug addiction runs out of control he has to leave Porno For Pyros during the recording of their second album Good God's Urge (1996). It takes the bassist a couple of years to get his life back on track. 'I had to go to jail a couple of times, had to spend time in a number of mental institutions, had to become homeless and live in a cardboard box under the freeway before I was finally clean,' is how LeNoble describes it in an interview with the Dutch music magazine FRET (May 2002).

1998 - 2001

His first job without the burden of drugs and alcohol is the recording session for 12 Bar Blues (1998), the solo debut by Scott Weiland (ex-Stone Temple Pilots), and the adjoining tour. Then follows the short-lived super group The Wondergirls (featuring members of the Stone Temple Pilots and The Cult) in 1999, the album Beyond Good And Evil (2001) and a tour with The Cult, and recordings for Perry Farrell's solo album Song Yet To Be Sung (2001). Farrell's band Jane's Addiction plays a reunion show at the Coachella Festival in California in April 2001. Martijn LeNoble performs the bass parts. The performance is a success and leads to an American tour. One of the highlights is a concert at the New York Madison Square Garden, shortly after the attack on the Twin Towers on 11 September 2001.

2002 - 2013

In March 2002 Jane's Addiction starts recording the album Strays. Half way through the sessions Perry Farrell kicks LeNoble out of the band, and his parts are re-recorded by someone else. The bassist keeps doing sessions and can be heard on albums by Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan (Live Monsters, 2004), Keith Caputo (A Fondness For Hometown Scars, 2008) and Soulsavers with Mark Lanegan (Broken, 2009). His engagement to actress Christina Applegate in 2010 doesn't go unnoticed. They marry in February 2013.
