Biography Marike Jager

Marike Jager is a Maastricht based singer/songwriter inspired by Carole King, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles. In 2003 she wins the final of the Grote Prijs van Nederland (the major Dutch talent competition) in the Singer/Songwriter category, and in 2006 she releases her debut album The Beauty Around.

2000 - 2002

Marike Jager (1979) grows up in Leusden. In 2000 she travels through Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand as a backpacker, and teaches herself to play the guitar during the journey. In South Africa she writes her first song, Lizzy, inspired by a meeting with a black South African girl at the hostel where Jager is staying. She returns to the Netherlands to study health sciences in Maastricht. In the meantime she starts the band HeyDay with drummer Michiel Ferdinandusse and bassist Jesse Mertens, and together they take part in various talent competitions. The band manages to win the Maastricht Studenten Songfestival (September 2001), the Sky Radio Talentenjacht (October) and the Studio Brussel Demopoll. HeyDay releases the CD Changing Places without the help of a label.

2003

Marike Jager is invited by keyboard player Henk Jan Heuvelink (Incense) for the music project Shaken Not Stirred, in which 25 musicians, technicians and artists write and record an album in Stavelot, Belgium, in January. After a preliminary round at the Maastricht venue D'n Hiemel HeyDay makes the final of the Limburg talent competition Nu Of Nooit on 9 March. The award eventually goes to the band Liftid. HeyDay is the runner-up, and Marike Jager is voted best female singer and best instrumentalist. In December she wins the final of the Grote Prijs van Nederland (the major Dutch talent competition) in the Singer/Songwriter category. 'Her lyrics are straight from the heart, funny and disarming,' according to the jury report. 'She is able to portray familiar situations with creativity and originality.'

2004 - 2006

Marike Jager in 2004 After her victory in the Grote Prijs van Nederland the singer quits HeyDay. She is joined on stage by keyboard player Henk Jan Heuvelink, and performs at the festivals The Music In My Head (2004), Noorderslag, De Beschaving, Oerol and Route 05 (2005). Het duo has a monthly spot in the radio show Opium on Radio 1 and is often joined by drummer Ipo van Drooge (16Down). He is also present when Jager and Heuvelink record their first album at producer Joeri Saal's Amsterdam Studio 150 in the summer of 2005. The debut CD The Beauty Around is released in May 2006 on Marike Jager's own label Morning Coffee Records and is distributed by V2. Drummer Haye Jellema (Hind) also guests on the album. On stage he becomes Marike Jager's regular drummer. The single Fling Flack Toodah is played regularly by various national radio stations. In June Jager performs at the Terschelling Oerol festival and at the Rotterdam edition of the travelling festival De Parade. In the months following she appears at the Utrecht and Amsterdam editions of De Parade, at the Delft Grachtenfestival and at Lowlands.

In the same month Marike Jager receives an Essent Award.

2008

Together with producer Joeri Saal (Paul Weller, Spinvis, Moke) Jager starts recording the dynamic album Celia Trigger. The record is inspired by a photo of a woman of 87 from Alabama with a gun in her hand. The gun symbolizes her loneliness and suspicion.

2009

Marike Jager guests on Pure Air, the solo debut of Anneke van Giersbergen (Agua de Annique). In January the singer performs at the Groningen festival Noorderslag. In May the album Celia Trigger is also officially released in Belgium. At the request of the Dutch consul general Jager visits Vietnam between 21 and 26 April, and performs on the borders of the Saigon River. De singer appears at De Parade, the Tilburg festival Because I'm A Girl (19 June), the celebrations surrounding the Nijmegen Vierdaagse walking event (20 July), the Zwarte Cross festival (26 July) and as support to Sinéad O'Connor at a sold-out concert at the Antwerp open air theater Rivierenhof. Marike Jager makes her TV debut as host at the Lowlands festival for the VPRO broadcasting company.
