Biography Marijn Simons

1982

Marijn Simons was born on December 25, 1982 in Geleen.

He received his initial violin tuition at the age of four. Almost simultaneously he vigorously started composing his own music and at the age of ten he wrote his first string quartet. Marijn now studies composition with Daan Manneke at the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam where he was also coached by the violin pedagogue Davina van Wely. Thereafter he studied with Saschko Gawriloff. Marijn has a marked preference for modern repertoire.

Marijn has performed in many radio and television broadcasts, even at a very early age. He gave his first solo recital at the age of ten and a year later he made his debut as a soloist in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. He has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Residentie Orkest (The Hague) which premièred his composition Noises in the Night. Marijn's tours were highly successful. A comprehensive documentary was made on Marijn as a composer and violinist by the Dutch AVRO television. His television production Cuddly Animals wholly devoted to his own works (its title is taken from the composer's violin concerto), is being screened all over the world.

In 1999 he composed his first piano concerto Concerto d'un bon Esprit, dedicated to and commissioned by Jean-Bernard Pommier. Concerto Comique, a trombone concerto composed in 2000, was commissioned by the French trombonist Jacques Mauger. The second violin concerto Secret Notes - a commission by Esa-Pekka Salonen - was premièred April 15th, 2002 by the composer in Los Angeles. In 2004 Marijn Simons was composer in residence at the Delft Chamber Music Festival.

In 2001 he was awarded the Philip Morris Arts Prize for music and in 2005 with the Wim Bary Perspektief Prijs and the Cultuurprijs of the Limburg province.
