Biography

Lucky Fonz III is an Amsterdam singer/songwriter and interpreter of folk-ballads in English. In December 2006 he wins the final of the Grote Prijs van Nederland (the major Dutch talent competition) in the Singer/Songwriter category. Lucky Fonz is part of the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild, plays piano in the Amsterdam/Rotterdam freejazz collective Aemstellarcreek, and also writes songs for others.

2002 - 2005

Before he becomes active as a singer/songwriter Lucky Fonz III (Otto Wichers, 1981) plays classical piano. Between the ages of fourteen and sixteen he listens to gabber, for a while he is obsessed with sixties pop and is active as a DJ, busker and bar pianist. He also plays in the band Wakestate. In 2002 Lucky Fonz is living in Edinburgh where he joins a group of traditional folk musicians. In Scotland he starts writing his own songs. In the ballads he writes in English traces of Anglo-American styles like folk, blues and country can be found. Back in Amsterdam he builds quite a loyal following thanks to performances in smaller and larger venues, and as a support act to Larkin Grimm, Badly Drawn Boy, Donavon Frankenreiter and Jason Molina. It is remarkable to observe how he can silence an audience with fragile repertoire, brought with a touchingly funny stage presentation. He wins both the jury and the audience award of the Amsterdam Hou-Je-Kop-Luister singer/songwriter competition.

2006

Lucky Fonz III At the beginning of the year the singer releases his untitled debut album, in small numbers and completely financed by himself. The record is received well and is played in radio shows on stations like Radio 2, KinkFM and the web channel 3voor12.nl. 3voor12 picks him for their special attention spot Hollandse Nieuwe in February and in June he wins Mooie Noten, the singer/songwriter competition organized by the Amsterdam organization GRAP. Lucky Fonz joins the travelling festival de Popronde and performs at the Rotterdam Metropolis festival. In December he wins the final of the Grote Prijs van Nederland (the major Dutch talent competition) in the Singer/Songwriter category. He graduates from the University of Amsterdam with a thesis on Bob Dylan entitled I Don't Believe In Zimmerman.

2007

3voor12 invites Lucky Fonz to perform at their special stage at the Groningen Noorderslag festival in January. During the months of July and August the singer travels through Australia as support act to CW Stoneking and The Beautiful Girls. His debut album is released in Australia by the Cruiserweight label. The album is also re-released in the Netherlands by PIAS, the label that also brings out Lucky Fonz's second album Life Is Short, in October. The CD was recorded in various living rooms and at Studio Jottem by Ro Halfhide, his Amsterdam Songwriters Guild colleague. One of the sources of inspiration for the record is the work of the Irish poet and Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney, but Lucky Fonz is also keen on Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel and even Guus Meeuwis. In this year the singer receives an Essent Award.

2008

The first three months the singer/songwriter does his first national tour, featuring a show at the 2008 edition of the Noorderslag festival, solo performances at most of the major stages in the Dutch club circuit and at the Brussels Ancienne Belgique on 28 February. In the summer Lucky Fonz III appears at the Lowlands festival, and does twelve shows in South Africa, plus a performance at the Oppikoppi festival, following the release of his album in the country. In the fall Lucky Fonz moves to Groningen where he starts work on his next album, produced by About's Rutger Hoedemakers. In the 2008-2009 season Lucky Fonz III gives musical commentary on the conversations in the popular TV talk show De Wereld Draait Door every last Friday of the month.

About

2009

In February Lucky Fonz III leaves for the United States and Canada for his first North American tour. He has been invited by various showcase festivals for an appearance, and can be seen at South By South West, the Canadian Music Week and the Next Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis. Lucky Fonz III also does a tour of four stages in Canada and performs in the same country with a thirty piece string orchestra. Aided by producer Rutger Hoedemaekers (About) the singer/songwriter opts for a broader musical approach for his third album A Family Like Ours (April). It results in a varied pop album with influences from sixties pop, rock 'n' roll, new wave and house. With singer Roosbeef he forms the DJ duo De Rotjes.

2010

In April Lucky Fonz III signs with the Top Notch record company. The first release is the vinyl single Ik Heb Een Meisje, featuring the South African version, Ek Het 'n Meisie, as its B side. The musician is responsible for the soundtrack for the film De Weg Naar Cádiz, a romantic drama by directors Jonathan Herzberg and Shariff Korver, which premieres in the Dutch cinemas in late April. In August Lucky Fonz III tours South Africa for the third time. The tour starts in Bloemfontein on 5 August and also includes the Oppikoppi festival in Northam. The musician also gives four shows in Cape Town. On his first album with Dutch lyrics, Hoe Je Honing Maakt (October) the singer is accompanied by the band De Felle Kleuren (drummer/producer Ro Halfhide and bassist Mark de Jonge). A press release calls the music on the album a modern combination of Armand and Boudewijn de Groot, both Dutch artists who are inspired by Bob Dylan.
